Emma Raducanu claims her natural game has been ‘coached out’ of her as she reveals new approach to hiring team

EMMA RADUCANU believes her natural approach to tennis was “coached out” of her —  and does not plan to hire a permanent trainer.

The British No 1 split with Francisco Roig after her Australian Open exit and revealed she wanted to return to playing like she did when she won the 2021 US Open.

Raducanu, 23, has used several coaches since her New York triumph and will work with Mark Petchey and hitting partner Alexis Canter at Indian Wells.

Raducanu, who will face Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova in round two after getting a bye in California, said: “I have had a lot of people telling me what to do, how to play, and it hasn’t necessarily fit.

“I want to come back to my natural way of playing.

“That takes time to relearn because that’s something that has been coached out of me a little bit.

“I don’t necessarily want to have one coach in the role because anyone I bring in is straight away going to be scrutinised — even if it’s a trial.

“I might feel the pressure to stick with them, even if it’s not necessarily the right decision.

“I would love to have a coach that works well but I don’t think it’s necessarily going to be easy to find one person and they are going to check every box.”

Raducanu has cycled through a whole host of coaches in recent years, from familiar faces like Petchey and Nick Cavaday to big names like Torben Beltz and Roig.

Signs that she could rediscover the form that won her the US Open have been fleeting.

It took more than four years after that Flushing Meadows triumph for Raducanu to reach another final.

And that ended in a heavy defeat to Sorana Cirstea at the Transylvania Open last month.

World No24 Raducanu will be hoping to better the fourth-round Indian Wells run she managed in 2023 when she turns out in California over the coming days.
