Speaking on the Women In The Nude podcast, she confessed: “It was pretty brutal because it came out of nowhere.”
The host asked if she was blindsided by the show bosses and she said “yeah absolutely no idea.”
Sarah recalled what they said during her exit meeting, she said: “The reason was we’d [bosses] put you through so much we’ve run out of stories to tell.
“What I’ve come to realise is my nine years on the show was amazing and I never would have left if they hadn’t have written me off.”
Sarah continued: “It was such a weird dichotomy because it hurt a lot in the moment but then the outpouring of love was so unbelievable and extraordinary from cast and crew.
“That was so exactly what I needed for that full circle closure. It was such a healing thing.”
Sarah confessed in the video that the experience was really painful and shocking. It left her really confused.
The 45-year-old admitted she probably asked the show bosses “why” about 19 times during her sacking.
Despite her time on the show coming to an end, Sarah has claimed she’s happy doing new work.
The TV star most recently appeared in the Hallmark Christmas mystery series Mistletoe Murders.
Grey’s Anatomy first hit our screens in 2005 and it has continued for over 20 seasons.
