League One club given chance for massive stadium expansion boosting capacity to 45,000

NOEL MOONEY says the Football Association of Wales have held talks with Cardiff over expanding their stadium to a 45,000-capacity.

Craig Bellamy‘s Dragons play at the League One ground which holds 33,000 and will be the venue for this month’s World Cup play-off semi-final against Bosnia.

Wales will play matches at the Principality Stadium at Euro 2028 should they qualify.

But FAW chief executive Mooney has confirmed that if Cardiff – top of the third tier and one point clear of Lincoln – return to the Premier League in the near future then an expansion is a real possibility to benefit club and country.

Mooney said: “Cardiff City Stadium suits us perfectly for our qualifiers but if you look to the future, there is no desire to build another football stadium when we have access to the current stadia.

“We would love to see Cardiff promoted back to the Premier League. We have spoken to the club and there is an opportunity to develop two ends. It would turn it (the capacity) from 33,000 seats into close to 45,000.

“That for us would be about right. We have a brilliant Red Wall that’s got a great brand all across the world. They have lit up tournaments. We are so lucky to have them.

“We want to deliver for them. Our fans are pretty clear that they want to stay at the Cardiff City Stadium.”

Wales made Cardiff City’s ground their home in 2010 and have not played at Welsh rugby’s Principality Stadium since a 4-1 friendly loss with Spain back in 2018.

But Mooney says venues such as Swansea, Wrexham and the Principality, are all to be a part of future plans.

Mooney told the Business of Sport podcast: “Cardiff City, where we play, our fans absolutely love it. It’s become a fortress for us.

“And then Swansea is a club that we’re really close to, of course, and they’ve got a lovely stadium, obviously that’s been in the Premier League.

“And then Wrexham is the one that’s the oldest international stadium in the world. They’re now redeveloping that stadium, which we’re supporting them on very much.

“We’re very lucky in that the Principality Stadium was developed with 74,000 seats. So when we kick off Euro 28 in that stadium, we have a stadium that was developed by lottery funding, we contribute to ourselves and of course the rugby union own it.

“We’re lucky to have that gorgeous stadium that’s hosted many FA Cup finals and so on, in the centre of the city. It’s fantastic.”
