Legendary car brand officially returns to UK after 6 years away

LEGENDARY car brand Mitsubishi is back in the UK after a six-year absence and it is relaunching with a familiar model.

Order books for the L200 pick-up are now open and the Japanese outfit has confirmed UK pricing and specs.

In double-cab form, the L200 starts at £36,295, while the Commercial version is £37,495, both before VAT.

The range is split into two trims, with Titan as the entry point and Barbarian as the higher-spec option, with the Barbarian priced from £39,995, which rises to £41,195 for the Commercial Barbarian.

For some content, the Toyota Hilux starts at roughly £43,000.

This new Series 7 L200 uses a 2.4-litre, twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel, described as a heavily revised version of the engine used in the previous-gen truck.

Mitsubishi says the reworked unit brings increases in power and torque, and in other markets the closely related Triton version is available with up to 201bhp – underlining the step up from some rivals such as the Isuzu D-Max, which offers 162bhp from a 1.9-litre diesel.

For UK motors, the L200 is rated to tow up to 3,500kg and carry up to 1,000kg, positioning it squarely in the working pick-up class.

Power is delivered through a six-speed automatic gearbox and a new all-wheel drive system that can switch between two and four-wheel drive.

It also features a low-range centre locking differential and provides seven selectable driving modes – spanning everyday use and more demanding terrain like snow, mud, sand and rocks.

The aim is to give the L200 both on-road flexibility and credible off-road capability – all without needing specialist modifications.

Standard equipment on the Titan is pitched at buyers who want a pick-up with a strong safety and plenty of convenience – and includes 17-inch alloy wheels, Mitsubishi’s drive mode system, a locking rear differential, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, a 360-degree camera, tinted windows and lumbar support.

Moving up to Barbarian brings more premium touches and comfort, such as 18-inch wheels, hill descent control, powered and heated leather seats, two-zone climate control, LED headlights, wireless phone charging, a leather steering wheel and carpeted flooring rather than the Titan’s vinyl floor covering.

In terms of styling, the new model clearly continues the tough, purposeful theme that helped previous L200s sell well in the UK.

The UK is perhaps in need of a pick-up rivalry, as several models have disappeared in recent years – including the Nissan Navara, Mercedes X-Class and Fiat Fullback.

Mitsubishi, which has been out of the scene since 2021, will be stepping into a competitive field with the L200, with the aforementioned Hilux, Ford Ranger, KGM Musso and Isuzu D-Max all huge favourites.

The returning brand will also be launching a new Outlander PHEV as well as a potential new, range-topping Shogun SUV.

Sadly, though, according to Auto Express, there’s no indication the hugely iconic Evo will be among the returnees.
