I added privacy to my council house windows with a £5 TikTok Shop buy

A BARGAIN hunter was desperate to add privacy to her council house windows but wasn’t sure where to start.

The mother from Barnsley confirmed that her bedroom is on the ground floor of her home and as a result, her neighbours can “see in.”

The self-proclaimed “skint mum on a budget” was unable to get blinds, but eager to do something about the lack of privacy, managed to opt for an affordable alternative.

Thankfully, the content creator was able to find a simple solution on TikTok Shop – and it cost her less than £5.

But while this savvy shopper was impressed with her window hack, the trolls were out in full force and some thought it looked “tacky.”

Posting on social media, the woman explained that she nabbed the 3D Striped Pattern Window Film, which ranges from £4.79 to £6.48.

I transformed my new build for £40 with B&Q buys – now it’s so cosy for winter

She said: “Trying to improve my council house and just make things look a bit nicer.

“If you live in a council house, you know the struggle of trying to get something nice on your windows – they put them stupid plastic reveals around everything.”

As well as this, she then explained why she can’t have a blind in her bedroom as she added: “This is my bedroom window and it’s got a steel lintel directly above it, so you can’t drill any holes to put a blind up inside the window.”

Showing outside the window, she expressed: “Also, this is my bedroom window – it’s really low, there’s a street across, everybody can see in.

The savvy mum then applied the high-quality PVC to her windows, which she described as “a frosted stripe which looks like lines.”

The DIY enthusiast confirmed that there are two size options to choose from and acknowledged that she nabbed three metres of the privacy film.

Rules on transforming your council house

According to Gov, the kind of improvements you can make to your council property depends on the type of tenancy you have.

Introductory tenants are usually limited to minor improvements like redecorating inside.

If you’re a secure tenant, you have the right to carry out improvements to your property. These include:

  • installing a new bathroom or kitchen
  • building an extension
  • putting up a garden shed or greenhouse
  • installing a new gas fire or fireplace
  • cavity wall insulation
  • redecorating the outside of a house
  • fitting an aerial or satellite dish

You might need your council’s written permission for work you do. Contact your council if you’re not sure.

She recognised that it “hasn’t quite covered” her window, but reinforced that she does have “a big window.”

Impressed by the cheap DIY hack, which was easy to apply and has now increased her privacy whilst adding style to her windows, the woman gushed: “If you struggle with your windows, this is a really good alternative.”

Big divide

The woman’s TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @lousttfinds, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 885,700 views.

But social media users were left totally divided by her hack – while some thought it looked “stunning,” not everyone was as complimentary.

One user beamed: “Looks stunning.”

Waste of money

A second agreed: “I love it.”

While someone else wrote: “We’ve had this up for years now, looks so nice.”

To this, the content creator responded and gushed: “Can’t believe I’ve not seen it before, so much better than blinds.”

However, at the same time, one person said: “Condensation will ruin that.”

Another added: “Looks tacky.”

Meanwhile, a third rudely snapped: “Waste of money.”
