THE price you see, needn’t be the price you pay.
Putting in a bit of effort and haggling for a better deal can be a big benefit to your bank balance.
From bills to a pair of shoes, here’s how to negotiate . . .
HERE’S THE DEAL: Haggling through second-hand sites is always a good idea.
Vinted has buttons where you can “make an offer” on items through other sites such as Facebook Marketplace.
Just message the seller and give an offer.
Keep the seller on side by offering a reasonable figure, usually a discount of between ten and 20 per cent is fair. If the item is in short supply, act fast and pay promptly so that it doesn’t get snapped up by someone else.
Sales assistants in big chains typically have less power to give discounts, but if you see a mark or damage to an item, you can typically get a discount if you point the problem out.
PRICE IS RIGHT: Do a little research beforehand and work out a good price for what it is that you’re looking to buy.
This is as easy as a quick run through a price or bills comparison site.
Set a fair target for the amount you want to pay — and be confident when asking for your lower price.
PLAY THE SYSTEM: Service providers for broadband, television, insurance, energy and phone are well worth haggling with for the best deal when a contract is up.
Tell the provider you are thinking of leaving because you have found a better deal elsewhere.
Usually, you will be put through to a retention team who have the power to lower your costs.
Ask if they can beat the lowest price you have found elsewhere.
Don’t just accept the first offer they give, ask if it is the best they can do.
Sometimes the provider will add extras to make the service appear more valuable if they can’t lower the price any further.
