Fofana, 25, played the full 90 minutes at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

But his side failed to get the all-important goal to level up the semi-final with Arsenal.

Trailing 3-2 from the first leg at Stamford Bridge, the terrible Blues only managed to muster up two shots on target and did not find the net.

And their exit to the Gunners was confirmed in the 97th minute when Kai Havertz rounded goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and tucked into an empty net.

There was barely time for the match to restart before the full-time whistle sounded.

And as soon as it was all over, dejected Fofana slumped down on his haunches and appeared to burst into tears.

He was spotted wiping his eyes, seemingly unable to contain his emotion at missing out on another piece of silverware.

Fofana won the Conference League last season and tasted Wembley glory with Leicester in the FA Cup final in 2021.

But Paul Merson felt the one-cap France international was right to be upset given his side’s performance.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “I’m flabbergasted. I can’t believe what I’ve just watched.

“Chelsea aren’t a bottom-five team. They have World Cup winners.

“Fofana is crying. He should be crying because they never had a go.

Chelsea ratings vs Arsenal: Fofana and Chalobah solid in defence but Delap fails to take chance in Arsenal clash

CHELSEA were beaten 1-0 at the Emirates as Arsenal booked their place in the League Cup final.

Liam Rosenior‘s side went into the semi-final second leg trailing 3-2 from the first encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues huffed and puffed in their pursuit of a leveller on the night.

But when they threw everyone forward in stoppage time, Blues old boy Kai Havertz came back to haunt them by netting on the counter.

SunSport’s Jack Rosser has rated and slated the Blues players

“They’ve gone out with a whimper in a semi-final.

“It hasn’t worked. Go out in a blaze of glory, don’t go out like that.”

Arsenal will face either Manchester City or Newcastle in March’s final, what they hope could be the first leg of a historic quadruple.

As for Fofana’s Chelsea, they will turn their attention to securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, progressing in the Champions League and getting past Liam Rosenior’s former club Hull City in the FA Cup.
