A seemingly straightforward picture question on The 1% Club knocked out 17 players – but could you work it out within 30 seconds?

Lee Mack hosts the popular ITV game show where the focus is on logic and common sense rather than general knowledge.

Each player in the game is worth a whopping £1,000 stake, which is added to the prize pot as they are eliminated if they fail to answer a question correctly, with those reaching the final round playing for up to £100,000, or a share of the winnings.

The show culminates in the challenging 1% question, a puzzle that statistically should leave 99% of people baffled – and if that’s answered correctly, contestants on screen take home a huge cash prize.

The latest episode saw 17 contestants eliminated after a picture question left them all stumped.

It was the ‘70%’ question, meaning fairly early on in the game and theoretically likelier to work out.

Lee asked the contestants: ‘How many scissors are there in the image below?’

The picture showed a collection of scissors stacked upon each other in a state of disarray.

Ultimately, the correct answer turned out to be six pairs of scissors.

By the end of the episode, only one contestant, Amena, remained in contention to win the £93,000 jackpot.

She gave up the chance to take home £10,000 in order to play for the big prize.

Lee asked her this question: ‘In the image below, three volumes of a cookery book series are lined up in order, next to each other on a shelf.

‘The total thickness of the pages of each volume is 5cm and each cover is 5mm thick.

‘What is the distance in centimetres between the first page of volume one and the last page of volume three?’

After the time limit was up, Lee revealed the correct answer to be six pairs of scissors altogether

The puzzle showed three books displayed on-screen, while Amena had only 30 seconds to work it out.

Once her time was up, Lee asked the sole remaining player for her answer.

‘14.9cm’, she replied.

Ultimately, Amena discovered she was incorrect with the right answer turning out to be 7cm.

Lee clarified: ‘When stored upright, the first page of the book is on the right and the last page is on the left.

‘So you only need to measure the pages of one book and four covers.’

Taking to X, one viewer penned: ‘That was a bl**dy dodgy last question.’

Another added: ‘That 1% Q makes no sense whatsoever.’

A third remarked: ‘Feel sorry for Amena but she did great to get to 1% question.’

While a fourth said: ‘That 1% question was a trick question bang out of order and in bad taste.’

The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
