Greggs launches first-ever matcha drink TODAY as it takes on Starbucks

GREGGS has entered a new era by launching a brand-new range of iced green tea drinks starting at just £3.

The high street bakery giant is taking the fight to posh coffee shops like Starbucks by offering matcha tea at a fraction of the usual price.

From today, thirsty fans can get their hands on a trio of new flavours including the classic iced matcha latte, a vanilla version, and a strawberry variety.

The standard latte contains just 100 calories, making it a lighter alternative for those watching their waistlines while they grab a bake.

While a standard iced matcha at Greggs costs just £3, shoppers at Starbucks can expect to pay upwards of £5.55 for a similar drink.

Costa Coffee is also more expensive with prices for an iced matcha starting at around £4.85, while Pret A Manger charges approximately £4.40 for its version.

Even trendy newcomer Blank Street Coffee, which is famous for its green tea range, typically charges around £3.90 for its iced matcha drinks.

To celebrate the massive menu shake-up, Greggs is doing something it has never done before by opening its own Pilates studio in Central London.

The “Matcha & Move” pop-up will run on February 13 and 14 at 59 Greek Street, offering a unique blend of wellness and puff pastry.

Fitness fans who manage to snag a spot will take part in a 30-minute workout featuring cheeky Greggs-inspired moves like the Sausage Roll Up and the Yum Yum Twist.

The cool-down is even better than the workout as every attendee will walk away with a free Iced Matcha and a post-workout sausage roll or vegan roll.

General booking for the studio sessions opens this Friday at 12pm through the links on the official Greggs Instagram and TikTok pages.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “We’re on a mission to offer our customers more choice and quality than ever before, without the premium price tag.

“By introducing our trio of Iced Matcha drinks, we’re making a trending favourite accessible to everyone on the high street.

“Importantly, the range doesn’t just look the part, but delivers on taste and quality too – we think our customers are going to love it so matcha!”

The matcha hype

MATCHA is a vibrant green tea powder that has taken social media by storm, but it is actually a traditional Japanese staple that has been around for centuries.

Unlike regular green tea where you steep the leaves and then throw them away, matcha is made by grinding the entire tea leaf into a very fine powder.

This means you are consuming the whole leaf, which gives the drink its famous neon green colour and a much stronger, earthier taste.

It is packed with antioxidants and provides a natural caffeine boost that many fans say feels smoother than the jittery hit you get from a strong cup of coffee.

To make the iced lattes found at Greggs, this powder is whisked with water and poured over cold milk and ice to create a refreshing, creamy drink.
