NEARLY 59,000 businesses have shut their doors for good in the first three weeks of 2026, according to a Sun investigation.

The plummeting state of the British economy has been laid bare as an incredible 58,900 firms folded in January, according to figures from Companies House, the official register of firms in the UK.

This week Labour have been warned they face being “washed away in a tide of discontent” at the next general election unless the Government tackles the decline of our main streets.

On Tuesday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled a £300million package for pubs and music venues, giving them a 15 per cent rates cut for three years from April, worth around £1,600 each.

But there is no help for restaurants, clubs and hotels, nor for desperate retailers who also face massive rates increases.

So, will the British high street recover? Have your say in our exclusive poll.
