New rules from the energy regulator Ofgem will see customers compensated £40 if their provider fails to install or repair their smart meter within 90 days.
Last March, Ofgem announced plans to review its Guaranteed Standards of Performance.
This included a new set of rules to improve the service offered by energy suppliers to customers that want a smart meter.
