A mass shooting has plunged a tribal reservation in Canada into lockdown as cops say a gunman left multiple fatalities.
The horror unfolded on the Cree Nation of Mistissini reservation, located in the James Bay region of Quebec, on Thursday morning.
Officials have not offered details over the number of victims injured or deceased, and the status of the gunman is unknown.
In a statement posted on social media, the leader of the community, Chief Michael Petawabano, asked residents to stay indoors and said ‘multiple fatalities’ were reported, per CBC.
The lockdown has restricted activity in the reservation’s community buildings, offices and facilities, and authorities have closed all travel in an out of the community.
Residents have been urged to remain indoors with their doors locked until instructed by law enforcement.
The Eeyou Eenou Police Force and Sûreté du Québec are investigating.

In his statement to the community, Petawabano said: ‘Our hearts are heavy with grief for the lives lost and the families affected by this tragedy.
‘We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives. The entire Cree Nation stands together during this difficult time.’
