Trampled jockey lies helpless as horses charge past in ‘appalling’ incident

THE BHA head office will look at an ‘appalling’ incident that saw a race continue past a stricken jockey who had been trampled by a horse.

Poor Callum Pritchard was rushed to hospital with injuries after he came down from the JP McManus-owned Limier D’Arthel at Huntingdon on Thursday.

The 9-2 chance, trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, sent his rider flying at the first hurdle in the 2m maiden won by Dan and Harry Skelton’s Double Measure.

Pritchard, who lost his helmet in the smash, was shown lying on the ground with medical professionals around him as the race carried on.

The horses thundered past at 30mph just yards from where he was.

Earlier footage showed other workers at the track running from the scene as the thoroughbreds came charging through.

The hurdle where Pritchard fell was dolled off but screens should have been put up around the jockey and medical personnel for protection.

Pritchard’s agent Sam Stronge confirmed he had gone to hospital for an X-ray on his leg but was ‘in good spirits’.

Former Grand National-winning jockey and now Racing TV presenter Daryl Jacob said from the track: “It was a really nasty incident.

“These jockeys, they are tough as old boots.

“Whenever they can get up they will straight away and when he was down and they bypassed the third last, to me that is always worrying.

“I wish him a speedy recovery.”

One viewer described the incident as ‘appalling’.

The official stewards’ report read: “An enquiry was held to consider the circumstances as to why the screens were not deployed around a fallen jockey at the third last hurdle on the final circuit.

“The Clerk of the Course was interviewed and shown recordings of the incident.

“After hearing their evidence, a report was forwarded to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority for further consideration.”
