According to The Times, football chiefs have commissioned a company that is part of the Universal Music group.

They will be tasked with coming up with a men’s FA Cup anthem and a separate one for the women’s competition.

The initiative aims to promote the pre-match atmosphere at cup games and build even more recognition of the historic tournament.

The FA Cup anthem would be played in stadiums during players’ handshakes from the early rounds through to the final at Wembley.

However, it will not replace the traditional hymn of Abide With Me nor any music played by clubs when their teams come out.

An FA insider told The Times: “We’ve seen the impact music can have on the pre-match atmosphere.

“It takes a while to build recognition but we see it in a number of Champions League games and notably at Celtic Park and Villa Park in recent years.

“This is all part of our marketing plan for the FA Cups — keeping them fresh and modern but clearly linking to their wonderful heritage.

“Music and sport work well together, not least in the digital era, and we are hoping for an anthem that is loved by the fans.”

A British composer could be appointed to write the cup anthems with orchestral elements.

Supporters’ groups may be consulted on sample music before a final decision is made.

An FA spokeswoman added: “We are working on some musical ideas for the FA Cups and hope to update in the months ahead.”
