Jamie Carragher explains fiery bust-up with Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa during Liverpool days

LIVERPOOL icon Jamie Carragher has revealed the reason behind his explosive on-pitch bust-up with Alvaro Arbeloa.

The two former defenders came to blows during a Premier League match against West Brom in 2009.

They had to be separated by Xabi Alonso after clashing and shoving each other mid-match.

Recalling the incident on CBS Sports on Wednesday, Carragher admitted that he was frustrated with Arbeloa and his attitude on the pitch.

He said: “We needed to keep a clean sheet there to make sure we got the most clean sheets in the season.

“He was a good player Arbeloa. He wasn’t a great player, he was a good player.

“And he started thinking he was a great player, so I just had to rein him back in a little bit.

“He was attacking too much, he didn’t want to defend and that was his job, just defend, let’s get our clean sheet.

“And I think we won 2-0 against West Brom that day and we got the Golden Glove for Pepe Reina.”

Arbeloa made 98 appearances for Liverpool during his two-year spell at Anfield.

The 43-year-old also played for Real Madrid, Deportivo La Coruna and West Ham.

He made headlines earlier this month when he was announced as the new Real Madrid head coach, replacing Alonso just moments after his departure.

Arbeloa lost his first game in charge to second division side Albacete in the Copa del Rey.

But he went on to beat Levante 2-0 in LaLiga and Monaco 6-1 in the Champions League with the team.
