Moment police horse chases down wanted criminal through town centre high street

THIS is the dramatic moment a police horse chased down a suspect across a high street in a busy town centre.

The stallion galloped to track down the individual in Blackburn, Lancashire after officers spotted a “very familiar face” wanted on recall to prison.

Ben Cootam, 41, tried to make a break for it when cops ordered him to stop.

Bodycam footage snapped the moment Cootam darted off, sparking a frantic chase with the officer on horseback.

The force are heard shouting “Ben, stop!” as the horse swept past pedestrians to track down Cootam.

Lancashire Police said Cottam quickly realised he “didn’t stand a chance against horse and rider”.

After catching up to the breathless suspect, Cootam was nabbed by police and taken into custody before being remanded to HMP Preston.

The force said the diligent police horse was later “tucked up in his stable with a carrot or two for a job well done”.

They quipped: “That’s what we would call some ah-neigh-zing work.”

It comes after shocking bodycam footage showed an out-of-control mutt attacking terrified police horses in a park last year.

Metropolitan Police officers Sergeant Leon Astley and PC Grace Miller-McCormack were riding Yvonne and Snaffles when the shocking scenes unfolded in West London on May 1 last year.

Dramatic bodycam footage from Monday shows the dog erratically darting between the two police animals in Shepard’s Bush Green.

It barks at the horses as its owner makes a half hearted effort to draw the brute away.

In a futile attempt to regain control they yell “come here now, fast”.

One officer senses the dog could be in danger and tells her colleague: “It’s going to get kicked.

“He’s literally on the leg.”

PC Miller-McCormack shouts to the owner: “Get a hold of your dog now.

“Get away now. You need to grab it.”

The footage cuts off as other parkgoers step in to help capture the mutt.

In a statement the Met Police said Yvonne and Snaffles suffered minor injuries but are happy back at their stables.
