President Donald Trump leaked private texts from world leaders and taunted allies with memes on the eve of his trip WEF, sharing messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and Secretary General of NATO Mark Rutte in a late-night social media blitz against critics of his plan to purchase the Arctic territory.
Trump revealed that he leaked the messages because they ‘made my point’ as he told the New York Post he spent Monday evening halting a Syrian prison break by European terrorists.
‘They’re saying, “Oh gee, let’s have dinner, let’s do this, let’s do that,” it just made my point,’ he continued. ‘European terrorists were in prison. They had a prison break. And working with the government of Syria and the new leader of Syria, they captured all the prisoners, put them back to jail, and these were the worst terrorists in the world, all from Europe.’
The prison break happened Monday at Al-Shaddadi prison in Syria after Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s troops advanced against Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces troops, with the Kurdish group agreeing to agreeing to hand over facilities holding 8,000 Islamic State fighters.
Meanwhile, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a news conference on Tuesday that the Arctic island’s population and authorities need to prepare for a possible military invasion amid pressure from Trump, saying: ‘It’s not likely there will be a military conflict, but it can’t be ruled out.’
Trump is scheduled to leave Washington, DC, on Tuesday evening for Davos, Switzerland, where he’ll hold high-stakes talks with European leaders over his Greenland plot.

Trump leaked message with world leaders because they ‘made my point’
Donald Trump told the New York Post he shared private text messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Truth Social because they ‘made my point.’
‘It just made my point. They’re saying, “Oh gee, let’s have dinner, let’s do this, let’s do that.” It just made my point,” Trump said.
Trump also added that Macron and Rutte commended his work preventing a prison break from Al-Shaddadi prison in Syria.
‘I did a great job. You know what I did? I stopped a prison break. Oh, we did a good job with Syria. They had a prison break. European prisoners were breaking and I got it stopped. That was yesterday,’ he said.

Trump says Maria Corina Machado ‘very nice woman’ who did ‘incredible thing’
Donald Trump briefly praised Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado during the White House press briefing.
‘Now I’m loving Venezuela. And they’ve been working with us so well. It’s been so nice. And, an unbelievably nice woman also did a very incredible thing,’ he said, referencing Machado gifting him her Nobel Peace Prize.
‘Maybe we can get her involved in some way. I’d love to be able to do that, Maria. Maybe we can do that.’
Scientists discover Greenland’s ‘Achilles heel’ that could force Trump to rethink his Arctic playbook
Scientists have identified a hidden geological weakness beneath Greenland’s ice sheet that could accelerate its collapse and complicate US ambitions in the Arctic.
A new study discovered a hidden layer of sediment, composed of soft dirt and sand, which has driven more of the Danish territory’s glaciers to melt, break apart, and fall into the ocean.
The finding suggested that the Greenland ice sheet is far less stable than it would be if it were anchored directly to hard bedrock. Instead, the sediment reduces friction, particularly as meltwater seeps downward, allowing massive ice sheets to move more easily.
The Oval Office portrait that quietly hinted at Greenland invasion
A portrait of James Polk, who oversaw the largest expansion of US territory in history during the 1800s, hangs in the Oval Office.
Trump cut a deal with Speaker Mike Johnson last year to swap a Thomas Jefferson portrait from the White House with the painting of Polk that was inside the Capitol.
‘He was sort of a real-estate guy,’ Trump told visitors to the Oval Office following his redecoration. ‘He got a lot of land.’

Trump’s Board of Peace will not replace UN, official says
The UN’s top humanitarian official and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said that Trump’s new Board of Peace will not replace the United Nations.
‘I’m clear and my colleagues are clear that the United Nations isn’t going anywhere’ he told CNN.
‘The United Nations wasn’t built for easy times, it was built for hard times and 2026 looks set to be a rough year, but we’re laser focused on getting out there and delivering for the hundreds of millions of people around the world who we serve,’ he continued.
The President’s Board of Peace is described in a charter as an international organization that ‘secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict,’ as reported by the Times of Israel.
US Commerce Secretary says America will go ‘tit-for-tat’ over tariff retaliation
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said ‘we’ll be back to a tit-for-tat’ if Europe follows through on threatened tariff retaliation.
‘And it will end in a very positive conversation between Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen, which is what happened last time,’ Lutnick said at the World Economic Forum.
‘So you can start with a kerfuffle, but in the end, the United States and Europe are great allies.
‘It doesn’t mean you don’t disagree, but it doesn’t change the fundamentals of the United States knows who our allies are,and if we’re going to have a kerfuffle, so be it. But we know where it’s going to end. It’s going to end in a reasonable manner.’
Canada’s military plots ‘insurgency-style’ tactics to fight back against US forces
Canada has quietly drawn up an ‘insurgency-style’ response, including ‘hit-and-run’ ambushes, to fight back against US forces in the event of an invasion.
The Canadian military has developed a model response to an American takeover, after US President Donald Trump once again mused online about gaining control of his northern neighbour, the Globe and Mail revealed on Tuesday.
Citing two unnamed senior government officials, the newspaper said the response would rely on insurgency-style warfare – echoing the tactics used by fighters in Afghanistan who resisted Soviet and later US forces.

What does Trump plan to discuss at Davos?
President Trump is set to head to the World Economic Forum at Davos in Switzerland on Tuesday evening.
He is expected to address the nation in a White House briefing alongside Karoline Leavitt at 1pm ahead of his departure to the forum.
At Davos, he will announce his plans to expand the remit for his international Board of Peace organization beyond Gaza.
‘The Board of Peace is not going to be limited to Gaza. It’s a Board of Peace around the world,’ a senior U.S. official told Axios.
Some international allies view the organization as a threat, with Trump establishing the board to rival the UN Security Council.
‘The president is focused on our hemisphere first, but he has his eye on the world. I wouldn’t say he’s fixated on global domination. He’s America first. And America is still the world’s leader,’ the official continued.
Russian Foreign Minister says NATO faces a ‘deep crisis’
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Donald Trump’s bid to take over Greenland creates a ‘deep crisis’ for NATO during his annual news conference on Tuesday.
‘It was hard to imagine before that such a thing could happen,’ Lavrov said, noting it could create a scenario in which ‘one NATO member is going to attack another NATO member.
‘Now it’s not the Collective West writing the rules but just one its representative. It’s a major upheaval for Europe, and we are watching it. The Euro-Atlantic concept of ensuring security and cooperation has discredited itself.’
Greenland PM warns of invasion
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen warned of a possible military invasion by the United States on Tuesday.
‘It’s not likely there will be a military conflict, but it can’t be ruled out,’ he said.
Greenland’s former prime minister, Mute B. Egede, who is now a member of parliament, also said, ‘We must be prepared for all the things that may happen.’
The officials added that the government will form a task force to help in the event of an invasion and said the government is working to release new guidelines advising people to store food and supplies for five days in their homes.
