Inter vs Arsenal preview
Arsenal arrive in Italy with one aim: secure a point to guarantee automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16.
Mikel Arteta’s side have enjoyed a stellar UCL group stage.
They are the only unbeaten team left in the competition, scoring 17 goals, conceding once, and keeping five clean sheets from six games. A win would also set their longest-ever winning streak in the European Cup/Champions League (7).
Achieving that would certainly help ease the frustration of the weekend, where Arsenal were held 0-0 at Nottingham Forest despite title rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa both losing.
Still, the landscape looks good for the Gunners, who hold a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, lead Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final, and should see off League One Wigan in the FA Cup.
Trips to Italy, however, have not been kind.
Arsenal’s last away win against an Italian side in the Champions League came in March 2008. Since then, they have failed to win on five straight visits (D1 L4), failing to score in any of those games.
Last season’s meeting with Inter also ended in defeat, with Hakan Calhanoglu netting the only goal from the spot.
Inter Milan, meanwhile, need maximum points to secure a top-eight finish. Sitting sixth with 12 points, the Nerazzurri are in a tight race with several clubs behind them with two matches remaining.
Despite successive Champions League defeats to Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, Inter arrive in confident form. They have won five of their last six Serie A matches, dropping points only to Napoli, and will need to continue that run ahead of a tricky trip to Borussia Dortmund in their final fixture.
