Sophie Turner discovered a chronic health issue while training for her role as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider television series.
The Game Of Thrones actress, 29, unearthed a recurring back problem during the gruelling training process ahead of her appearance as the epic adventurer.
Appearing on The Julia Cunningham Show, Sophie said: ‘We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week since February last year, of training. Yeah, so it’s been a lot.
‘I’ve learned I have a perpetual back problem, but I also realised that it’s much easier to kind of build muscle if you’ve ever worked out before in your life, which I never had, so it has taken me months and months and months to get into good shape.’
Sophie is best known for starring as Sansa Stark in the HBO series Game Of Thrones, but she insisted her years on the show didn’t help prepare her for Tomb Raider because she was never involved in any action scenes.

‘No, I was the cool queen who, like, didn’t have to do that. I also just kind of was the one that got beat up, not the one doing the beating.
‘So, it’s quite nice to learn how to throw a punch and not just take it,’ she explained.
The actress, who has daughters Willa, five, and Delphine, three, with her ex-husband Joe Jonas, is the latest to take on the role of Lara Croft following two films starring Angelina Jolie and another with Alicia Vikander.
The series, which is currently in production, is an adaptation of the classic video game franchise.
Amazon MGM Studios unveiled a first-look photo of the actress in character as the legendary video game hero last week.
In the snap, Sophie channelled Lara’s signature look of black shorts and a green tank top, with a leather backpack, aviator sunglasses and a braided ponytail.
The Amazon MGM Studios Instagram account posted: ‘Get your artefacts out. Lara’s on her way.’

Sophie previously revealed she had been training for a year for her new role in the series.
Speaking to ScreenRant, she said: ‘I can’t say much, but my preparation began in February [2025].
‘I’ve been training for a long time now, coming up on a year, and we’re going to start shooting in January.
‘I’m really excited, but I feel prepped, and I feel really lucky to have such a great relationship with Amazon, and I’m excited for the world to see what we do with Lara and Tomb Raider. I think it’s going to be something special.’
She joins the likes of Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs in the video game adaptation.
Sophie will next star in the hotly-anticipated drama Steal, which will see her take on the role of an ordinary office worker who is caught in the middle of a massive criminal operation.
All six episodes will premiere on January 21 on Amazon Prime.
