Game-changing editing trick on The Traitors ‘exposed’ by Richard Osman – and it could blow another BBC twist wide open

Richard Osman ‘exposed’ a crucial editing trick on The Traitors – and it could have a big impact on a BBC twist.

The presenter and bestselling author, 55, spent many years in TV production before becoming an on-camera figure.

Speaking on his podcast The Rest is Entertainment, Richard highlighted 35-year-old Matthew Hyndman, who is a Faithful in the current series.

In last Friday’s (January 9) episode, Matthew won the privilege to speak with the Traitors, albeit without seeing who they are.

He offered himself up for recruitment, while suggesting the Traitors ‘murder’ fellow player Jessie Stride, 28, whom they’d just claimed was their intended next target.

This surprised viewers, given the creative director had played a low-key game and was not featured prominently up to that point.

Richard’s co-host Marina Hyde acknowledged Matthew’s under the radar status, saying: ‘It means so much more when he walked into the church and was like: “I’m ready to do a deal with you.”‘

The Thursday Murder Club author replied: ‘So, oftentimes you will go light on someone in the edit because you know that they’re a big player later on.’

Marina added: ‘There’ll be more coming.’

Wednesday’s (January 14) installment resolved the cliffhanger, with Traitors Rachel and Stephen ‘agreeing’ to this deal – while planning to betray Matthew later on.

The episode ended with Jessie as one of three potential ‘murder’ targets, along with Adam and James.

But as Jessie has a shield from the latest mission – unbeknown to Rachel and Stephen – honouring their ‘agreement’ with Matthew could backfire.

In the turret, Rachel and Stephen contemplated whether to recruit Matthew that night.

They ultimately decided against this and instead opted to ‘murder’ – despite not being fully certain which Faithful have shields protecting them.

And following Harriet Tyce’s banishment from the castle, the remaining Faithful appear to be looking at Matthew and Roxy, 32, as new suspects.

Earlier in the series, fans claimed they had ‘never seen Matthew before‘ due to his being featured less frequently.

Matthew, from Northern Ireland, made his debut on the BBC One show on New Year’s Day, although he has appeared to fly under the radar of many fans.

Sharing their thoughts on X, viewers asked: ‘Is it me, or has no one else seen Matthew in Traitors before today’s episode?!’;

‘Genuinely who the f*** is Matthew?’; ‘Has Matthew been here the whole time?!’

Others commented: ‘The Traitors are gaslighting me into believing there is a white man with brown hair called Matthew in the castle who has always been there’;

‘Just watching Traitors on catch up. Who the f*** is Matthew? Never seen him before’;

‘I didn’t know Matthew existed until now’; ‘Where did he come from??’; ‘Whose Matthew lol.’

On why he applied for The Traitors, the contestant said previously: ‘It’s an adventure and just seems fun.

‘My New Year’s resolution was to have more adventures, and what I meant by that was more hiking, canoe trips, and camping, that sort of thing, but I’ve watched The Traitors and absolutely loved it, so I just thought why not give it a go.’

The Traitors continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
