But fans of the show really aren’t happy with James, who in a sneaky move screwed over the rest of his team members.

In tonight’s challenge the contestants were split up into teams and brought to the Fountain of the Faithful – a fountain filled with red-tinged water and hundreds of coins.

Eight cherub statues were missing from the fountain, and the challenge required everyone to hunt for coins in the murky water with directions on the back detailing the location of all of the missing parts.

Upon locating the cherub statues, each one had to be carried back to the fountain in an all or nothing task – if all eight weren’t found, the challenge was lost.

However, in a true Claudia Winkleman-style twist, an immunity shield rested quietly in a box underneath each of the cherubs.

From the get-go many members of the faithful were interested in bagging a shield to protect them from murder – including James.

Though James’ team agreed that only one of them was going to bag a shield without revealing who has it.

That way, the traitors have no way of knowing who or how many of the team are immune.

James appeared to have other plans though, and in a blink-and-you’ll -miss-it moment, he swiped a shield for himself when the others weren’t looking.

Speaking on the moment, which he himself described as “selfish” after the fact, James said: “It’s self preservation, the money is irrelevant if you’re going to be murdered.”

Viewers of the show were shocked by James’ behaviour, feeling he acted unfairly towards his team who had a plan.

“I reckon that might come back to bite James in the butt,” said one user on X.

“You gotta keep an eye on snakes like James. Unfortunately you don’t see them coming,” said another.

A third added: “He’s more of a traitor than the actual traitors.”

After the mission came to a close, James cracked under pressure and revealed to others around him that he had swiped a shield for himself.

Though his team didn’t respond in an understanding manner, saying he’s “screwed it up for the rest of them.”

The Traitors is available to watch on BBC One at 8pm.
