M1 grinds to a halt at Luton Airport due to broken down lorry with 60-minute delays and 6.5 miles of congestion

THE M1 has ground to a halt at Luton Airport due to a broken down lorry with commuters facing long delays and miles of congestion.

Two lanes are closed on the M1 southbound in Bedfordshire between Junction 11 and Junction 10.

National Highways say traffic officers and recovery are on the scene after a lorry broke down.

Motorists are currently facing a 60 minute delay and more than 6.5 miles of congestion on approach, they added.

Normal traffic conditions won’t be expected until later this morning after 9.30am.

Posting to social media, National Highways said: “Two lanes (of four) remain closed on the M1 southbound in Bedfordshire between J11 (Dunstable) and J10 (Luton) due to a broken down lorry.

“Recovery is en-route to scene.

“There’s now a 60 minute delay and 6.5 miles of congestion on approach.”
