Mystery as human remains discovered at a flat as cops charge man, 65, for ‘preventing lawful burial’

AN URGENT probe has been launched after human remains were discovered inside a flat.

Police were called to the property in St Helens, Merseyside, at around 11.30am on Saturday.

The force was responding to reports of a concern for safety before making the grim find.

Officers uncovered human remains at the flat, in Geralds Court, and arrested a 65-year-old man at the scene.

George Gordon, of Geralds Court, has now been charged with preventing lawful and decent burial of a dead body and obstructing a coroner in the execution of his/her duty.

He has been remanded in custody and is next due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Monday.

The investigation is ongoing as cops say the body has not yet been identified.

Merseyside Police have urged anyone who may have information to come forward.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We can confirm a man has been charged after human remains were found in a flat in St Helens.

“At around 11.30pm on Thursday 8 January, we received a report of a concern for safety and following enquiries, officers located the remains inside a flat in Gerards Court.

“The person is yet to be formally identified. George Gordon, 65, of Gerards Court, in St Helens, was arrested at the scene and has now been charged with preventing lawful and decent burial of a dead body and obstructing a coroner in the execution of his/her duty.

“He has been remanded to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (Monday 12 January).

“As part of the ongoing investigation, a 58-year-old man from St Helens has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“He remains in police custody and will be questioned. Criminal proceedings are now active and it’s extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.
