Maguire took on Gao Yang for a chance to reach this year’s prestigious tournament.

But things went very wrong for the Scot as he crashed to a 5-4 defeat.

Maguire was 63-35 down in the final frame yet looked set to clean up to win the match.

He potted the last red and quickly moved onto the black.

Many were expected Maguire to make short work of the ball before wiping out the colours.

However, he used too much power when potting the black.

And to his dismay, Maguire ended up sinking the cue ball as well.

The 44-year-old froze in horror as he realised he had effectively lost the match.

Amazingly, Maguire didn’t even bother to let Yang clean up for the win.

He instead conceded the frame to his opponent, thereby handing Yang victory in the match.

The pair shook hands, but Maguire was unable to control his emotions.

As he walked back past the table, he thumped a nearby wall twice in anger.

Maguire then returned to the dressing room to stew over his potted white.

It reminded some of his meltdown while missed a red against Judd Trump in the UK Championship in November.

Maguire said at the time: “I’m p****d off with the table, it cost me, I’m not very happy.

“He was there for the taking, I was the better player, I should have won.

“How can you not get the table up to scratch? It’s not a hard job. I feel hard done by, but it’s not sour grapes. There’s no way he played better than me.”
