A CHEAP bathroom item can avoid the irritation of scraping frozen windscreens as glacial temperatures are set to hit as low as -15C.
While the first snow of the season settled across the nation and temperatures begin to drop below – 10C in some places, car windscreens are also freezing over.
The National Severe Weather Warnings for snow and ice have been put in place for the week, with Wednesday set to bring a drop to -3C, adding in a daily windscreen scrape for driving commuters.
The daily scrape coupled with getting into a freezing car is enough to make one not want to get out of bed at all.
However, this £1 bathroom item could be the key to unlocking an ice-free easy morning, affording motorists extra precious minutes under the covers.
Reddit contributors shared the viral hack, using a humble bathroom towel, to avoid spending extra time in the cold winter air.
“Putting a towel on your windscreen while you’re not using you car [is] a good way to stop it from frosting up,” one user said.
Online pundits said best practice was to put the towel over the windshield the night before, saying: “If it’s really cold you can even dry it by smashed the frozen towel so that all the ice cracks and falls off”.
Other said the towel trick was “the best way to go about it”.
The hack could come in handy, as Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Chris Almond announced that January 8 will take arctic temperatures to a new level in the UK.
“Thursday will see another cold night, with potentially the lowest temperatures of the winter so far, -15C… is possible in locations with lying snow in Scotland or northern England.”
Other viral hacks to unfreeze windscreens include using a sandwich bag filled with one part hot water and another part tap water.
While there are various hacks and tricks out there to speed it up, the viral one of using a bag of hot water is commonly warned against as a dangerous practice.
