Host Claudia Winkleman chose contestants Stephen, Rachel and Hugo to be the initial three Traitors but revealed a twist nobody saw coming.

This year, a secret Traitor was chosen and they will wear a red cloak instead of the usual green one the Traitors wear.

This person will be able to select three Faithfuls for consideration to be murdered each night, before the Traitors decide to kill one.

Following their first mission, ten names were up for the first murder, with the secret Traitor zeroing in on James, Netty and Maz.

TRUTH EXPOSED

Viewers will have to tune into Friday night’s episode to see who will be the first to be murdered but they’ve already shared their theories on who it could be.

Posting on Reddit, one fan expressed: “Maz is the most likely to get murdered IMO – James is far too valuable for creating chaotic narratives, and Nelly has heat on her already.”

Another person commented: “I think Maz is being murdered.”

Somebody else said: “Maz going first? James would be silly to remove because he is so untactful.”

Yet another suggested: “Maz is going. James and Nettie both got a lot more screentime.”

While a fifth penned: “Got to be Maz then, James and Netty have more potential to disrupt things.”

Ahead of the show airing, former Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia revealed how she picked the secret Traitor.

She divulged: “You had to pick somebody who wanted it. I mean, in the celebrity version, lots of them asked to be Faithful. I think in this cast, they all want it.

“So it was somebody who sits with me in front of the fire and goes, ‘I absolutely need to be a Traitor’.

“There is somebody who is so convincing and just goes, ‘It absolutely has to be me’. So the Secret Traitor is that person.”

As viewers tuned into the first episode, they became convinced they could work out the identity of the person in question.

The first challenge involved teams rowing to the middle of a loch to drag coffins to open graves in the hopes they were filled with gold to add to the prize pot. They managed to add £10,000 in total.

But in one of the premiere’s many twists, the graves had names of each of the competitors and placing a coffin in their grave would automatically put them up for murder.

People watching at home said this was actually a fast-track way to surmise who the Secret Traitor was.

“Wouldn’t the shortlist soon give away the secret traitor in the long term if they aren’t putting their name down?” wrote one person on X, formerly Twitter.

Another person posted: “So if a coffin goes in the grave of the secret traitor then they’re not going to be up for the chop, so then the traitors (and viewers) will discover the secret traitor?!”

And a third wrote: “Okay so if they can figure out who the secret traitor is they’re going to have to banish them as soon as possible.”

Then whittling down the shortlisted names for murder, viewers began ruling out who the Secret Traitor could be.

“So we know the secret traitor isn’t James, Netty or Maz. You’d think it wouldn’t be one of the traitors but I wouldn’t want to rule that out already,” wrote one fan on X.

The Traitors continues on Friday at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
