He will likely make his second debut in next Wednesday’s clash with Manchester City.

Gross, 34, spent seven seasons at Albion in his first spell and played more than 230 games for the Seagulls before joining Borussia Dortmund for around £8.5m in July 2024.

Reflecting on his time at Brighton after his first stint, the midfielder said: “I got to represent the Albion in some of the best stadiums in the world, on that first journey into Europe and Marseille, Amsterdam, Athens and Rome; and to wear the blue and white stripes at Wembley in two FA Cup semi-finals.

“There are so many people I would like to thank… They put so much into what makes this club so special.

“And to the fans, who have been amazing since the day I arrived, thank you. I’m sorry to be leaving you, but I hope I will get a chance to say goodbye and thank you in person at a match very soon.”

Gross also vowed to return to the south coast one day, adding: “I don’t know what the future holds, after playing, but the club means so much to me and my family.

“I know I will be back at some point in the future, even if it’s just as a fan to support the club.”

Dortmund are second in Germany’s Bundesliga but nine points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich.
