COPS have launched an urgent investigation after the body of a woman was found in a river in a New Year’s Day tragedy.
Emergency services were called to River Waveney at The Quay, after reports a woman was in the water at 8am today.
Ambulance crews swooped on the scene and recovered the woman, believed to be in her 60s, from the river, where she was confirmed to be deceased.
The death is currently being treated as unexplained, but there is currently no evidence to suggest it is suspicious, said Suffolk Police.
Cops have not yet been able to identify who the woman is and are appealing for help from the public to establish what her final movements were.
But the force is appealing for help from the public to help trace her final movements.
She is described as being white with a petite build and short curly brown hair, and was wearing a cream cardigan, a blue top, white jeans, and white boots at the time.
Detectives also believe the woman might have been carrying a pink coat, as well as a torch and umbrella.
Fishermen said a body was recovered by officers from the water near a flyover bridge and the scene has been cordoned off.
Three police cars and a forensics van could be seen at the riverside while police tape has been stretched across sections of a footpath.
Suffolk Police also added that the coroner has been notified of the death.
A boat owner claimed the grim find was made in the water right next to their vessel.
One man, who travelled to the water to go fishing, said: “They brought a body out of the river this morning.
“We got here at about 7.30am, and there was everything here – police, fire engines and ambulances.
“Then, later on, they put the police tape up, and they’re not letting anyone through.”
Another man who was fishing said: “I heard that they found a body, but I’ve only just got here, so I don’t know anymore than that.”
