AS I paddle in the warm waters of the Med in my shorts, the experience is made even sweeter by the knowledge that it’s grey and cold back in the UK.
It’s mid-November and my partner and I have flown to Cyprus, for a week of T-shirt weather, great beaches and al fresco dining.
Despite its proximity to Britain – a four-hour plane ride away – the city of Paphos on the southwest of the island remains beautifully balmy throughout our stay – with highs of 25C.
So over the next couple of months, while the UK battles ice and frost, the ancient city is a perfect short-haul option for a winter sun break, with return flights from £50.
Even in December, the daily temperatures regularly hit 20C, and Paphos’s stunning golden beaches are pleasantly empty.
The earlier sunsets are truly spectacular, providing a dramatic backdrop before you even think about dinner.
Finding a place to stay is easy, with seafront accommodation in a range of prices – we opted for the Leonardo Plaza Cypria Maris.
The 4-star hotel has sea-view rooms and was just a one-minute walk to the sand.
While the seafront provided the sunshine and relaxation, the heart and soul of local life, and some of the best food was found just a ten-minute taxi ride away in the charming Old Town.
This area was a maze of delicious discoveries, packed with wonderful places to eat and drink.

We found traditional Cypriot taverns tucked away down every narrow street, our favourite Onar.
Their affordable sharing plates were a feast, from succulent souvlaki to fresh dips and braised beef.
Of course, no trip to Paphos is complete without a visit to the lively Port area, which blends history, local trade, and laid-back holiday vibes.
You spent three afternoons browsing the local markets, relaxing at seafront cafes, and just soaking up the atmosphere.
For some history, Paphos Castle sits at the harbour’s edge and a visit cost us just €2.50.
But the port truly came alive in the late afternoon, where it was the perfect spot for people-watching and grabbing a pre-dinner glass of Cypriot wine.
But if you’re seeking a restaurant with undisturbed, panoramic views, make a reservation at Muse.
This hidden gem sits atop a cliff in central Paphos, offering sweeping vistas over the entire town.
It’s was the ideal location for our final meal in the sunny city, where we ate fantastic local food and pointed out all the places we’d explored in the previous days.
