I’m a skincare obsessive and these are the best moisturisers for dry skin I can’t live without in winter

There’s a lot to love about the winter – namely Christmas parties, indulgent food and cosy nights in. However, when it comes to skincare, the colder months bring with them a set of challenges and it’s important to treat and repair your winter skin with the right moisturising winter products.

To offset the chilly temperatures temperatures and constant nose-blowing that comes with seasonal colds, it’s important to arm yourself with the right moisturiser and lay in on thick – quite literally, in this case.

I’m the kind of person who reaches for a lotion or potion as soon as I’ve washed my face because I can’t stand that stripped, tight feeling that comes with foregoing skincare.

I’m regularly told that I look ‘babyfaced’ for 33, but I know that’s not just about wining a genetic lottery, but rather taking meticulous care of my face all-year round.

I’ve tested dozens of moisturisers to save you some guesswork and help you drill down into the pros and cons of a variety of formulas at different price points.

Whether you’re dipping your toe into the world of skincare or are a seasoned pro looking to mix things up, you’ll find plenty of options here from some of the world’s leading cosmetic brands.

Best moisturiser for dry skin: Quick list

How we test

When testing skincare, we try each product out for several consecutive days to account for both first impressions and daily wear.

For moisturisers, this includes keeping all additional skincare steps (cleansers, serums, SPF etc) the same as control variables, so we can credit any changes to the skin specifically with the moisturiser.

We also test how they wear alone vs under makeup and by morning vs at night to give you and idea of how they might best fit into your daily routine.

Of course not everyone has the same skin type so bear in mind these have been put to the test on a moderately dry complexion, rather than an oily or acne-prone one, which may find some of these nourishing formulas cloying.

What we love

  • VersatileA day cream, night cream or glow-boosting primer all in one – this product is a true jack of all trades depending on how much you slather on.

  • Instant softnessThe ceramides and shea butter in this formula leave you skin feeling silky smooth from the first application with serious lasting power too – all the more impressive given the light, whipped texture.

  • Surprisingly gentleSometimes fragranced products cause irritation around my eyelids but that wasn’t the case here, so don’t be scared off by the scent.

Review

This whipped, airy cream quenches, soothes and provides all-day moisture, making it an effective all-rounder.

The perfect balance of lightweight on the skin yet deeply hydrating, it works equally well as a day or night cream.

When I started using this I had a small amount of residual skin peeling from trying out a retinol serum and this proved to be a quick fix.

With a triple whammy of hyaluronic acid, ceramides and shea butter, this cream helps your skin hold onto moisture all day long and has a light, refreshing scent.

This formula also plays well with other products – I added a few bronzing drops one day for a very sheer wash of colour and the result was a subtle, golden sheen.

MOLVANY Artichoke Calming Care Soothing Cream

MOLVANY Artichoke Calming Care Soothing Cream

What we love

  • Refreshing textureThe popping moisture beads bring far more than novelty factor and provide an instant hit of hydration without any cloying heaviness

  • Botanical brillianceFor lovers of natural ingredients the skin-loving artichoke leaf extract, bamboo complex, squalane and ectoin will be well received

  • Soothing supremeThis takes the heat and redness out of dry and irritated complexions in a matter of minutes and is great for burns or chapped skin

  • Top-up friendlyThanks to its fast-absorption the product layers well when reapplied later in the day, never pilling or congealing on the face

Review

This is like boba for the skin – in the best possible way. Containing popping beads that burst upon application, this moisturiser hits the skin with a splash of moisture and soothing coolness.

Containing a powerhouse of natural ingredients, including artichoke leaf extract, squalane, ectoin and a bamoo complex, this botanical blend packs a serious punch when it comes to hydration.

I applied this after a day of hiking after suffering some windburn and the relief was immediate, plus it minimised redness in a matter of minutes.

I suspect this would double up well as an after-sun balm in the summer months and I also found it worked fantastically as a hand cream in a pinch.

I can honestly say I’ve never tried a formula like it – I think it would work just as well on normal or combination skin types as it doesn’t have the cloying, heavy texture that can sometimes come with products aimed at dry skin.

e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Face Cream

e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Face Cream

What we love

  • Budget friendlyYou’ll struggle to find another moisturiser that performs this well at such a reasonable price point

  • Non-greasyThe lightweight formula sinks in easily and hydrates without ever feeling feeling cloying or heavy

  • Holy trinityAs ingredients go, tried and tested hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides make a fantastic team

Review

This budget-friendly pick overachieves for its price point – proving you don’t need to bankrupt yourself for hydrated, happy skin.

The texture is more lightweight than most of the others on this list, but don’t let that put you off. The cocktail of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides feels fresh and bouncy on the skin, rather than cloying or heavy.

If you’re someone who likes layering products on top of your moisturiser, such as SPF of makeup, the instant absorption of this cream is ideal.

However if you’re someone who prefers fragrance free products, you may take issue with the fresh, almost citrus-like smell, which reminded me ever so slightly of a cleaning product.

Nonetheless, this is a fantastic place to start if you’re taking your first steps into skincare and I’ve already bought a batch for my nieces and nephews, knowing that it’ll work just as well for their combination skin.

Charlotte's Magic Cream

Charlotte’s Magic Cream

What we love

  • Unrivalled glowThis moisturiser truly brings your skin to life, leaving a luminous, dewy sheen that makes even the driest of complexions glow

  • Jam-packed with activesThe Magic 8 Matrix means this is an overachieving ingredients list that tackles dryness on multiple fronts, giving you serious bang for your buck

  • Leading with luxuryEverything from the glamorous packaging to the stunning scent and buttery texture makes this feel luxurious, like a daily treat rather than a chore

Review

Charlotte’s Magic Cream is a masterclass in luxury – and I’m not just talking about the undeniably stunning packaging. The brand is famed for gracing the faces of some of the world’s most A-list stars and using this cream certainly made me feel VIP.

The buttery formula glides over the skin, while the floral scent from frangipani extract and camelia oil made application feel like some kind of spa-like aromatherapy treatment.

Meanwhile the ingredients list proves that this cream isn’t style over substance. The formula contains the signature Magic 8 Matrix which combats dryness on multiple fronts. The combination of peptides, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and vitamin C and E bring immediate glow to the skin.

I like a dewy look so very much embraced this, but if you’re someone who prefers a matte finish, you’re probably not going to click with the product. It’s also worth bearing this in mind if you wear makeup – the luminosity will likely shine through your foundation unless you apply A LOT of powder, which kind of defeats the point of this radiance-enhancing product.

It takes a while for the cream to sink in, so I would take advantage of the extra slip and enjoy a little facial massage, which helps with lymphatic drainage.

Medik8 Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream

Medik8 Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream

What we love

  • Lasting powerOne application will take you from first thing in the morning to bedtime with no need to reapply

  • Instant reliefThe formula sinks in easily and you can feel your skin barrier being soothed immediately, perfect for any dry or chapped patches

  • Priming powerFor those who wear makeup, you can afford to skip skin primer as this moisturiser provides a perfect, quenched base for foundation, concealer or whatever else follows

Review

This moisturiser is the perfect day cream, providing hydration that lasted me from 7am to 10pm without any topping up required.

It’s fragrance free and the buttery formula goes a very long way, taking the sting out of the higher price point.

Ingredients-wise, the star players here are prebiotic peptides, ceramides, lipids and muti-weight hyaluronic acid, providing intense nourishment.

I applied this to cracked skin around my nose towards the last days of a cold and felt immediate relief as it bolstered my skin barrier.

This also makes the perfect priming moisturiser if you wear makeup. I noticed that my tinted SPF and concealer went on incredibly smoothly without any settling into pores or fine lines.

If wearing alone, it provides a slightly dewy finish, tapping into the ‘glass skin’ trend that so many are chasing at the moment and providing a healthy glow.

6. Best moisturiser for sensitive skin: Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturising Cream

Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturising Cream

Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturising Cream

What we love

  • Lasting powerJust two pumps for my entire face and neck lasted me from morning until bedtime with no need to reapply

  • Sensitive supremeIf your skin is reactive and prone to redness or flare-ups you’ll be hard-pushed to find a more soothing formula that gets to work within just minutes of application

  • Packaging on pointThe pump design is far more than a gimmick – it ensures no product is wasted with overapplication, as can be the case with squeezable tubes

Review

At at hefty £72 this cream had a lot to prove but it managed to win me over with its soothing, long-wearing formula.

Containing a blend of lactose, milk proteins, and aloe, this moisturiser is a creamy cocktail that can calm even the most reactive, sensitive complexions.

Meanwhile the vitamin E and grapeseed oil deliver antioxidants which go a long way in a day cream, shielding the skin from environmental stress. As someone who leaves in London where pollution is rife, this is a huge bonus.

The packaging means that you never waste any product by overapplying – I used two pumps to cover my face and neck and that felt like plenty.

Cosmetically this left me with a subtle sheen that was on the right side of the dewy vs oily border, plus I found it made a great base for both cream and powder makeup products.

If you’re in the mood to splurge, this is the perfect investment for a happy, healthy skin barrier.

Green People Scent Free 24-Hour Cream

Green People Scent Free 24-Hour Cream

What we love

  • Anti-ageingOn top of moisturising, this cream contains ingredients that boost skin firmness and elasticity

  • Guilt-freeGreen People’s cruelty-free, vegan and organic formulas are all given the ethical consumer guide’s stamp or approval, plus are made in the UK

  • Gently does itThis soothing, calming formula is suitable for even the most sensitive of skin types – meaning no stinging or flare-ups

  • Perfect canvasThis moisturiser doesn’t leave a shiny or oily cast to the skin, instead drying down to a soft matte finish, which sits well under makeup

Review

This organic, fragrance-free cream is perfect for anyone with dry and sensitive skin who wants a formula that’s as gentle as it is nourishing.

It’s no surprise that this is one of Green People’s best-selling products, with skin barrier-boosting prebiotics and hydrating cacay oil and evening primrose oil instantly soothing upon application. Meanwhile signature ingredient Baicalin stimulates the production of anti-ageing enzymes and the repair of skin cells, promoting firmness and elasticity.

I found two pumps to be enough to cover my entire face and neck. Consistency-wise, the cream is middle of the road – easy to absorb but not so light that you don’t feel the benefit all day long.

I actually found that this dried down to a velvety matte finish rather than a super dewy one, meaning it works fantastically as a primer for makeup.

There’s also a scented version of this product if you prefer some sensorial stimulation upon application.

Side note – for those who like to support British brands, Green People’s entire roster of cosmetics are made in the UK, plus they’re cruelty free, gluten free and vegan.

Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion

Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion

What we love

  • Bargain buyAt less than a tenner this is impossible to beat on price and is great value for money

  • Skincare staminaDuring trials this formula lasted a whopping 100 hours on the skin and I can attest to the results – there’s no need to reapply throughout the day

  • VersatilitySuitable for adults and infants, the face and body and being hypoallergenic, this truly is a moisturiser for everyone

Review

If you’re willing to forego glamour for performance, look not further than this bargain buy.

Packed full of ceramides, this lotion cocoons your skin barrier from the first application with unrivalled staying power. Trials claimed that the formula lasts for 100 ours, which I was initially cynical about, but having tried it for myself I can see what all the fuss is about.

This truly is a wonder cream for everyone, suitable for infants and adults, the face and body. It’s hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and free from mineral oil, synthetic colourants and animal products.

Sure, it doesn’t look glamorous in your bathroom cabinet and has a more simple ingredients list than some of our other picks, but if you want a cheap option that hydrates your skin from morning to midnight, you won’t find better than this.

You can also purchase this in a larger 350ml size for even better value.

E45 Face Night Cream

E45 Face Night Cream

What we love

  • Affordable and accessibleThis product is difficult to beat on price point – plus it can be picked up from many supermarkets or pharmacies, so is easy to get hold of.

  • Great for eczema-prone, sensitive skinWith no fragrance on potentially irritating essential oils in the mix this product is safe for all skin types, so you don’t have to worry about exacerbating a flare up when you slather this on.

What could be better

  • Leaves a white castThis formula is difficult to work in and can leave you looking a bit ghostly with its thick white tint, but as long as you stick to using this at night, as intended, this shouldn’t be a dealbreaker.

Review

Okay, so this might not be the most glamorous pick, but if you’re in a pinch in a chemists a need something reliable, you can’t go wrong here.

E45’s highly emollient formula will soothe dry, irritated skin and is suitable for eczema-prone, sensitive complexions too.

Containing vitamin E and plant oils, the product is non comedogenic, vegan and dermatologically tested – or in layman’s terms, doesn’t contain any nasties.

It’s occlusive, immediately bolstering one’s skin’s barrier with just a pea-sized amount.

What’s more, at £15, this is an affordable pick that won’t break the bank.

However, this is not the kind of night cream that can double up as a daytime moisturiser.

It can leave a white cast on the skin and is a little difficult to rub in, so save this for just before bedtime, when you skin will have time to soak it up.

Our verdict

If I were to survive with just a couple of the moisturisers above, it would be the Medik8 Total Moisture Daily Face Cream by day and the Sculpted By Aimee CloudCream.

They sit among the middle of the list in terms of price point and performed fantastically when it came to immediately relieving dryness, without needing regular top ups.

They also both sat well under SPF and makeup, without any kind of primer necessary.

For gifting, the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream delivers serious wow factor, while skincare newbies who don’t want to break the bank would do well to combine the e.l.f. Holy Hydration! cream in the morning with the E45 Face Night Cream overnight for a great beginner duo.

Special mention must be given to k-beauty’s contributions: ILLYOON Ceramide Ato Lotion and MOLVANY Artichoke Calming Care Soothing Cream. These were the first products I tried from the respective brands and both wowed me with their gentle, skin-barrier soothing formulas at great value for money.

FAQs

Are fragranced products bad for dry skin?

If you’re extremely reactive or sensitive, fragrance-free products are generally a safer choice, but those with moderately dry skin will likely need to try a formula before ascertaining if it triggers an adverse reaction.

Not necessarily. Fragranced skincare CAN be bad for dry skin because fragrances may contain irritants that can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier. This in turn can lead to exacerbated dryness, redness, itching and inflammation.

If you’re extremely reactive or sensitive, fragrance-free products are generally a safer choice, but those with moderately dry skin will likely need to try a formula before ascertaining if it triggers an adverse reaction.

Should I see a dermatologist for my dry skin?

If your skin is persistently inflamed, painful or cracked, it may be time to see a dermatologist.

Irritated skin can disrupt sleep, or signal an underlying condition like eczema or psoriasis, and these need professional diagnosis and targeted treatments. These may include prescription creams or addressing issues like kidney or thyroid problems.

However, slight tightness, peeling or roughness can be treated with the regular use a suitable moisturiser.

What ingredients are best for dry skin?

For dry skin many the best ingredients attract and lock in moisture, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which are in the humectant family.

They should also seal this moisture in with emollients and occlusives, like ceramides, squalane and shea butter, which repair the skin barrier and prevent water loss,

Meanwhile nourishing additions like niacinamide and aloe vera help to soothe and protect, leading to softer, healthier skin overall.
