MARTYN WAGHORN has reignited his playing career by joining non-league side Anstey Nomads – and he could make his debut on Saturday.
The former Premier League striker, 35, initially hung up his boots after his contract at Northampton was torn up 12 months ago.
But Waghorn has come out of retirement after completing a free transfer to Anstey Nomads.
And the seventh-tier side, who are in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division’s play-off places, have confirmed that he could make his first appearance this weekend.
In a club statement released on X, Anstey Nomads said: “Welcome Martyn Waghorn.
“Anstey Nomads are delighted to announce the signing of Martyn Waghorn.
“Waghorn will be available for Saturday’s home fixture vs Bourne Town on January 3. Come and see him and the boys in action at Cropston Road!”
Anstey Nomads’ latest recruit made six Premier League appearances when he was on Sunderland’s books at the start of his career.
And Waghorn went on to feature for the likes of Leicester, Wigan, Ipswich, Derby and Coventry during his time in the EFL.
He also helped to steer Rangers back into the Scottish Premiership in 2016, when he was the Glasgow giants’ top goalscorer.

Waghorn was involved in the Baller League following his initial retirement – notching 12 goals in nine outings.
The former England under-21 international was bossed by Arsenal legends Jens Lehmann and Robert Pires in the six-a-side competition.
New employers Anstey Nomads, based in Leicestershire, are 14 points adrift of table-toppers Carlton Town but have two games in hand.
They suffered a 3-2 defeat to Racing Club Warwick, who are on cusp of the play-off places, on Saturday.
Waghorn, who spent time training with Derby in the final stages of last season, has been tasked with spearheading Anstey Nomads to promotion.
