However, the grumpy detective was not in the holiday spirit, and a puzzling murder did little to improve the situation.

The victim was found in the pool of a holiday home being rented by a British businesswoman, who wanted to treat her son and two employees to a festive trip away.

The four people all claimed they didn’t know the victim, and so Melvin called on his former Commissioner Selwyn for help.

Selwyn was in the UK heading to spend Christmas with his daughter, having decided not to accept his old job back at the end of the last series.

He headed to the office of the businesswoman, where he was helped by Marjory the friendly receptionist – who had been left out of the trip – to search the premises.

Selwyn discovered the gun that shot the victim in Saint Marie was locked in the drawer of a former employee who recently left the company.

The rest of the episode saw Melvin and his team trying to figure out how the gun could have got from the Caribbean to England, and who had fired it in the first place.

For Selwyn, his job as done and he headed to the local station to try and get up north to his daughter, only to have his train cancelled.

After being unable to get a taxi or hire car, Marjory appeared and invited him to stay at hers for Christmas.

The duo shared a sweet Christmas lunch together, but soon, the murderer was identified and the day took a dark turn as the truth finally came out, but we won’t spoil that part for you.

Once the culprit was handcuffed and carted off to a cell, Selwyn was seen reflecting on what had happened, before pulling out his mobile phone and making a call.

He said: “Chief commissioner, it’s Selwyn Patterson, apologies for calling you through the holidays.

“But I wanted to know if you’d found my replacement, as yet?”

He listened for a moment, then said: “I see, I’ve been doing some thinking…and I wondered if there was any chance of my returning to the role? If it’s still vacant?”

As Caribbean music started to play and the camera panned out, it seems Selwyn could be heading back to Saint Marie in the new series after all.

And that’s a Christmas present any Death in Paradise fans will happily accept.
