But they didn’t let the unusual circumstances limit their fun – instead turning to a different sport to try and rile up the locals.

Dozens of Barmy Army cricket fanatics were spotted – and heard – in the away end when Melbourne City FC hosted Perth Glory on Sunday.

Chants of “we are the army, the Barmy Army” rang out around AAMI Park, which is just a few hundred metres from the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Many of the English contingent were decked out in Perth Glory tops as they watched the visitors earn a 3-1 win.

A hat-trick from former Derby and Rangers star Tom Lawrence put Glory in control before a stoppage-time consolation from Andrew Nabbout.

That was the Barmy Army’s second cause for celebration in as many days.

England finally put an Ashes Test victory on the board on Saturday, successfully chasing down 175 to win by four wickets.

Ben Stokes’ side had arrived in Melbourne licking the wounds of a 3-0 deficit after being soundly beaten in the first three Tests.

That had left them fighting for little more than pride when they rocked up at the MCG. But they still found their first Test win on Aussie soil for 15 years.

Captain Stokes said: “These tours are tough so obviously we are over the moon that we managed to get on the right side of this, it’s a good feeling.

“It means a lot. We play for so many different things and the support of the Barmy Army, supporting us around the world, means a lot.

“The guys out in the middle, it means a hell of lot to us as players.”

The fifth and final Ashes Test is scheduled to start on January 4 in Sydney.
