A GRANDAD was crushed to death at a McDonald’s drive-thru after he was squashed between the payment window and his car.
Michael Dickinson, 69, became trapped between his vehicle and the side of a building during the horrifying freak accident on Tuesday.
The beloved grandfather was rushed to hospital following the harrowing ordeal at 10:30 am local time in Grand Island, Nebraska.
But he tragically died despite efforts to save him.
Local cops dubbed Michael’s death “100 per cent a freak accident”.
Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott said: “It appears the deceased opened the door to further reach out the window for payment purposes.
“We’re not sure if the vehicle lurched forward or what happened, but he got pinched between the door frame and the drive-through window counter.”
A McDonald’s employee was also injured amid the chaos, police added.
The staff member rushed outside and tried to free Michael by jumping into the car through the passenger door before suffering injuries.
He was taken to hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Local cops are now probing the full circumstances of the tragedy.
The drive-thru was quickly cleaned and re-opened just two hours later for the remainder of the day.
Dickinson had his right leg amputated in September 2021, his daughter said in a Facebook post.
She explained that he had been fitted with a prosthetic soon after and had to re-learn how to walk.
Heartbreaking tributes poured in for the late grandad.
His relatives remembered “his love” on their first Christmas without him.
And they said in a social media post that he had a dedication “to help and be there when it mattered most”.
His loved ones said: “A skilled and hardworking mechanic, Michael took pride in his work and had a gift for fixing what was broken.
“It reflected who he was – reliable, practical, and dedicated.”
They added: “Though his life was cut short, Michael’s love, loyalty, and kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
“He will be dearly missed and always remembered.”
