A CHRISTMAS tragedy has struck a family in Brazil after a two-year-old girl drowned in a bucket of water inside her own home.
Isabele Louise de Sousa Silva was found by her horrified mum in the bathroom of the family house in São João da Canabrava, in the state of Piauí, on Christmas Eve.
Police say the toddler’s mother had been washing clothes in an outdoor laundry area when the house suddenly fell quiet.
When she went to check, her daughter was missing.
According to investigators, Isabele is believed to have fallen headfirst into a bucket containing water and was unable to climb out.
A local military police commander described the frantic moments leading up to the discovery.
Sergeant Franco told Globo G1: “The mother was outside the house, in the laundry room, washing some clothes, when she noticed the child was missing.
“Searching the house, she couldn’t find her, eventually locating her inside the bathroom, practically drowned.
“In despair, the mother pulled the nearly lifeless child out and called for help from the neighbors.”
Neighbours rushed to help and attempted to resuscitate the girl while emergency assistance was called.
Isabele was taken to the town’s local health unit, where first aid was given, before being transferred to a medical unit in the nearby town of Bocaina.
The child tragically didn’t resist and later died.
Her body was sent to the Justino Luz Regional Hospital in Picos for examinations to confirm the cause of death.
Police are accompanying the case and are treating the incident as a domestic accident.
Local education authorities released a statement expressing sorrow over the girl’s death, saying Isabele would have turned three in January.
Her mother works at a local school where the child was enrolled.
It comes after a toddler tragically died in a devastating piranha attack after straying from her home and falling into a river.
Two-year-old Clara Vitoria was fatally attacked by the flesh-eating fish after she slipped into the water in the Brazilian state of Amazonas.
The tragedy happened on Monday when the child wandered away from her parents and fell through an unfenced opening in a floating structure by the river.
Her parents realised something was wrong when they could no longer find her and began searching.
They located her in the river around five minutes later.
Although Clara was pulled from the water, she was unresponsive and could not be saved.
