A MAJOR motorway has ground to a halt following a crash with Christmas getaway drivers warned of long delays.

One lane is closed in both directions on the M61 in Lancashire between Junction 6 and Junction 8 due to a collision.

Emergency services raced to the scene earlier this morning, according to National Highways.

They said motorists are facing “long delays northbound” with more than four miles of congestion.

Repairs have also been arranged after the crash damaged the central reservation barrier.

In a statement on social media, National Highways said: “Lane three (of three) remains closed in both directions between J6 (Bolton) and J8 (Chorley) due to a collision which has damaged the central reservation barrier.

“Repairs have been arranged. There are long delays northbound”.
