Trans killer, 30, who executed her parents then converted to Islam is jailed for 25 years after trying to skip ‘stressful’ sentencing

A transgender killer who murdered her parents told a judge she has converted to Islam behind bars as she was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Mia Bailey, 30, begged the judge to let her skip the hearing in a Utah court on Friday, voicing concerns that reliving details of her crimes could spark a mental breakdown.

She was sentenced to two consecutive sentences of 25 years to life for murdering her parents, Joseph and Gail Bailey.

Bailey also received up to five years for aggravated assault for shooting at her brother during the same incident. He had locked himself in a bedroom with his wife.

In a statement read to the courtroom by Bailey’s attorney Ryan Stout on her behalf, the convicted killer revealed she had become a devout Muslim behind bars.

‘Because of my religious beliefs as a Muslim, it would be appropriate to take my life for atonement for what I did,’ she said.

Stout also explained that Bailey, who changed her name and gender about a year before the June 2024 murders, had been diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, psychosis, possible bipolar disorder with psychosis, and schizophrenia.

‘The most recent time she committed herself [to the hospital], she was discharged three days later, and 10 days later she murdered her parents,’ Stout said.

She was found 16 hours later following a widespread manhunt.

Her brothers also provided statements to the court, indicating they feared for their lives.

‘What’s best for us and what’s best for Mia is probably staying in prison for as long as possible,’ Corey Bailey told the judge.

‘We’ve lost our parents, and we’ve lost a sibling in many ways as well. So either way, no matter what, we are losing as a family on this sentence.’

He acknowledged that he doesn’t believe Bailey was in the right mind at the time of the murders, but that he is still afraid of what might happen.

Bailey’s other brother, Dustin, addressed her directly with his statement, noting: ‘It was clear you were not safe or well.’

But Dustin said their mother, Gail, was always Bailey’s most prominent defender and advocate, and did whatever she could to get Bailey help.

‘When Mia struggled, Gail’s response was not frustration or withdrawal. It was persistence,’ Dustin said.
