LOOKING for last-minute Christmas presents but don’t want to spend a fortune? Use the ‘abandoned’ discount trick to save you serious cash.
MoneySavingExpert has revealed a sneaky way to slash 20% off your online shopping – and anyone can do it.

The abandoned discount trick is where you log into your online shopping account, add items to your basket, and then leave the site without buying anything.
In its weekly newsletter, MoneySavingExpert said that within 48 hours, some companies will send you discount codes as a way to tempt you back to complete the shop.
The key is to keep an eye on your emails. The consumer site said that the shops most likely to send you codes are Argos, Currys, Morrisons.
Shoppers have reported using the trick and getting 20% off their shopping hauls.
One bargain hunter who added a wedding dress to her Asos basket and then left the site for a day said: “This morning I had a nice surprise email from Asos offering 20% off, as they’d noticed me window shopping. Got £37 off my wedding dress!”
While another tweeted: “@MartinSLewis This is my favourite game to play with Boden… Leave a full basket a few days and £10 voucher turns up in the post every time.”
Shoppers have also reported Sainsbury’s offering £12 vouchers when they’ve used the method.
While others have reported they’ve been sent free delivery codes from JD Sports, Next and Dorothy Perkins, and M&S Sparks offers after leaving items in their basket.
To ensure it works for you, favourite specific items without buying them – this also helps increase the chance of receiving a code.
Use the trick on resale sites too, such as eBay or Vinted. These sites will send offers to buyers watching specific items of up to 30% off.
Last year, TikTok user Carolineshops spoke about using this hack to get money off her hauls.
She said: “The abandoned shopping basket trick is something that I use regularly and I have saved loads of money by doing this.”
More shopping tips
There are many other ways that you can save money when shopping.
You should be on the lookout for prices ending in a 7, 8 or 1 when looking around shops; this means that it’s a clearance or end-of-line.
If you suspect it’s clearance then you can often haggle the price, as staff are rumoured to earn commission if they shift end-of-line stock.
For example, one user tweeted: “I worked at a big electrical store – those numbers mean it’s clearance. If there is no more in stock, you can get the display item and then ask for an extra 20% off.”
Another good way to save money on your shop is by just politely asking for a discount.
For some stores it’s built into their policies; if someone asks for a discount they are required to oblige.
It’s always worth giving it a go, the worst that can happen is they say no.
Shoppers have reported this method being successful in Currys and John Lewis.
It’s important to shop around before buying your items. Use different price comparison sites such as PriceSpy and LatestDeals.co.uk.
The Google Shopping tab is another great way to see how products compare price wise.
Another way to be sensible with your cash is to plan exactly what you want before you go out to the shops.
This is especially important at this time year where money can be tight – as it helps you avoid spending money on things that you haven’t budgeted for.
