‘Do we want to be remembered as COWARDS?’

WOLVES skipper Matt Doherty has told team-mates they are in danger of being labelled COWARDS.

This defeat at home to Brentford saw the Premier League record for a winless start to a season equalled.

Wolves have now matched Sheffield United’s 17-game false start from five years ago.

It was also an extension of an all-time Wanderers worst for successive top-flight defeats — now ten games.

And with just two points on the board, Rob Edwards’ strugglers are in serious danger of ending the season with fewer points than Derby’s record low of 11 in 2008.

Trips to Liverpool and Manchester United are up next and defender Doherty, 33 — the club’s longest-serving player — did not hold back after the final whistle.

He said: “Do we want to be remembered for fighting until the end of the season?

“Or do we want to be remembered for being cowards and taking maybe the easy option out — and maybe trying to leave in January or letting other people take your position.

“It’s like we’re scared to go ahead in a game.

“We need to find the confidence. We need to do some soul-searching, have a look in the mirror and figure out what we want to be remembered for at the club.”

He added: “It has to be. We need something, whether that’s in the loan market or whatever.

“We’re going to need some fresh energy.

“I’m not going to say which positions, but we need something.

“I’m sure behind the scenes the club will be looking. From what I remember the club have always been proactive in the January market.

“We’re going to need everyone to find the level of last season — we were in a tough spot this time last year as well, but this is a lot worse.”

Manager Edwards says owners Fosun want to help him — but admits the stats are not encouraging.

He said: “We need to stand up now, otherwise things will be really difficult. I asked the players what they want to do and one or two spoke. They are trying.”
