Woman terrified as ‘enormous’ Canada goose smashes through her front door while she watches TV

A woman was left ‘terrified’ after a goose smashed its way through her front door while she was watching television.

Lynne Sewell assumed someone was trying to kick her door down when she heard a loud bang – before she found the huge bird wedged in the glass window at her property in Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, on Wednesday.

Wildlife rescuers speculate the Canada goose must have been fatigued and misjudged its landing.

They said the goose suffered a few cuts and will make a swift return to the wild.

Ms Sewell was watching Manchester City against Brentford with her friend, Ian Bullock, and initially suspected human vandals may have been behind the bang.

She told the BBC: ‘I thought it was probably someone trying to kick the door or something.

‘My friend went out first because I was scared – and he shouted ‘there’s a bird with its head through the glass’.’

‘We didn’t know if it was alive or dead,’ she added. ‘I was so scared. I was scared by the loud bang to start with, and it was enormous.’

The goose managed to waddle its way onto the porch after its break-in.

Her friend Ian Bullock assumed it was a traffic accident and called the RSPCA and police.

The pair did not have any support because of how late it was, so they waited until the morning to see if the goose survived.

They gave the goose a bowl of water, a small blanket, and some porridge oats.

‘I was thinking about it all night in bed, wondering what to expect the next morning,’ Ms Sewell recalled.

The next morning, Mr Bullock arranged for the Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital in Kibworth Harcourt to pick up the goose when he discovered it was still alive.

Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital Team Leader, Amy Blower arrived and wrapped the stricken fowl up.

She was surprised by the goose smashing into the door and believes it may have misjudged its landing due to fatigue.

‘It’s very unusual to be in the middle of a housing estate and flying that late at night.

‘Surprisingly, he’s just come off with a few minor scrapes and wounds from the glass he’s smashed through.

‘He had a small laceration to his beak and one just on the left side of his body – but other than that, he was pretty much absolutely fine,’ she said.

The goose will be released back into the wild after taking pain medication and antibiotics.

Ms Sewell has boarded up her front door and will arrange for it to be properly fixed through her insurance company.

She said: ‘I really don’t know how it could have gone through that glass and survived.

‘The chances of that happening, it’s just not what you expect, is it?’
