
MUSIC legend Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield’s cause of death has been revealed after the Manchester icon passed away aged 63.
The death of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist was confirmed by family members last month.
The musician died peacefully in his sleep of ‘respiratory issues’ linked to a long-standing lung condition, the Manchester Evening News has revealed.
Paramedics attended the family home in Heaton Moor, Stockport, on the morning of Thursday, November 20.
The paper understands he was not taken to hospital, with his death being declared at the scene.
Police are not believed to have attended the address with a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson confirming the tragedy was ‘non-suspicious’.
His death has not been referred to the coroner, South Manchester Coroners’ Court, in Stockport.
Gary’s family have now confirmed to the M.E.N. that he passed away peacefully in his sleep.
His death was caused by ‘respiratory issues’ linked to long-standing emphysema.
The tragic news of the star’s passing was posted on social media by his brother Greg.
His former bandmate, Ian Brown, was among a raft of people from the world of music and beyond who paid moving tributes.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham described him as a ‘magnificent musician and Mancunian’.
Mani’s death came almost two years to the day after losing his beloved wife Imelda, who passed away, aged 50, on November 18, 2023.
She had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in November 2020.
The couple have twin sons – Gene and George, aged 13- born in January 2013.
Mani’s funeral is due to take place on Monday 22 December.
A service, to which entry is by invite only, is being held at Manchester Cathedral at 11:30am.
This will be followed by a private committal service and an invite-only wake.
Born in Crumpsall, Mani, who was raised in Moston and Failsworth, attended Xaverian College in Rusholme, Manchester.
He left school aged 16 and joined The Stone Roses in 1987.
He played with them until they disbanded in 1996, when he joined Primal Scream.
In 2011, he announced he was reforming The Stone Roses after members of the band reunited at his mum’s funeral. They embarked on several reunion tours.
Shortly before his death, Mani had announced a huge national speaking tour visiting more than 60 venues.
