Biggest used car price drops of 2025 revealed

THESE are the second hand cars that have fallen in price drastically this year – all but one are EVs.

Popular brands like Nissan, Mercedes, and Vauxhall, are seeing the price of their used cars drop by up to 29% for second hand buyers.

Fresh data from the trade valuations provider, CAP HPI, shows the Nissan e-NV200 suffered the biggest percentage fall in the last 12 months.

The firm’s head of car valuations, Chris Plumb, said: “It has been a year of two halves for battery electric vehicles (BEV), with greater pressure in the first half than the second.

“Encouragingly, despite an increase in the supply of used BEVs returning to the market, demand from retailers and consumers has grown, particularly for BEVs aged over three years and priced under £20,000.”

CAP HPI’s released data shows that in 2025, all but one of the most depreciating cars to buy second hand was an electric vehicle.

While the market for these models may be up, electric cars dominate the list of the biggest fallers.

The only second hand car that is not an EV on the list is the Vauxhall Grandland X, which dropped in price by 17.2% this year.

The top five are all EVs, with the Subaru Solterra in second place, down 28.5%, and the SsangYong Korando Electric in third, falling 22.1%.

The Lexus UX Electric was in fourth place, falling 21.1% and the MG5 was fifth with a drop of 20.4%.

Plumb said: “For consumers, used BEVs over three years old represent exceptional value for money, especially when factoring in running cost savings, particularly if home charging is an option.

“Over the past three months, we have seen values rise for BEVs over three years old, including models such as the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, VW ID.3, and Mini Cooper Electric, as they continue to deliver outstanding affordability and appeal.”

Tough time for EV owners

Octopus Energy, one of Britain’s biggest energy provides, informed their customers that it will restrict its price cut on their EV tariff from 2026, costing eco-friendly drivers hundreds of pounds annually.

Used by more than 260,000 drivers, Octopus’ Intelligent Go tariff is one of the most popular EV plans in Britain.

The plan to cut costs of running an EV by discounting home charging will be limited to just six hours a day.

This could more than double the costs of fully charging cars with large batteries that can take more than 10 hours to charge.

This is likely to drive up customers’ energy bills as customers will have to pay peak rates around four times higher if they want to charge their car for a longer period.

Although, Octopus explained that four in five charging sessions on the tariff already take six hours or less, suggesting it wouldn’t effect majority of customers.

However, following the government’s newly introduced pay-per-mile tax, which will force EV drivers to pay 3p a mile from 2028, drivers will certainly feel the pinch.

Altogether this threatens to slow the rise of EV sales with the Office for Budget Responsibility saying the policy will cut sales by 440,000 over the next five years.
