Gary Lineker hits back at Tommy Robinson in online spat over video of former Match of the Day star with his daughter-in-law

Gary Lineker has shut down Tommy Robinson after the far-right thug reposted a video of the Match of the Day star with his daughter-in-law.

The former England and Barcelona striker, 65, looked unfazed as he was filmed by fans walking along the streets of Mexico with Bella Lineker.

The clip, which went viral on social media, was reposted by 43-year-old Robinson, who appeared to suggest Lineker was up to something as he wrote: ‘What you up to here @GaryLineker?’ alongside the two-eyes emoji.

Quick to point out the woman was his son’s wife, Lineker boldly replied: ‘If you must know, I was going to a chemist with my daughter-in-law, to get some medicine for her unwell husband….my son.’

The presenter added: ‘Hatred is a dreadful weakness.’

Lineker had been in Mexico last month for a week-long trip, where he was inducted into the International Football Hall of Fame during a glitzy ceremony in Pachuca.

The clip of him with Bella was initially posted by a fan, who posted the video on Instagram alongside the caption: ‘What are the chances you meet Gary Lineker in the street in Mexico?’

Bella smiles awkwardly as a fan is heard saying: ‘What’s up Gary? How are you doing? Enjoy your holiday.’

Lineker waves and says ‘you too’, before catching up with his son, Harry, who is briefly seen in the short video wearing Mexican side Tigres’ yellow home shirt.

Harry shared a snap on his Instagram two weeks ago from his holiday in Mexico, where he and his glamorous wife are seen wearing the same outfits.

Jermaine Jenas and Alan Shearer were among those to react to the post, with his uncle Wayne writing: ‘Love this pic.’

The football legend is now back in Britain and was seen yesterday on his 65th birthday in the stands at Selhurst Park to watch Manchester United’s 2-1 comeback win against Crystal Palace.

It was revealed earlier this month that Lineker is to defect to Netflix with an ‘an extraordinarily lucrative’ deal which will see him star on the streamer during next year’s World Cup.

Lineker will host his The Rest Is Football podcast for the platform from North America following his exit from the BBC in May after he shared a social media post about Zionism that included an illustration of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic insult.

He was due to go to America to anchor the BBC’s coverage of the tournament as his final project after 25 years at the Corporation but that was axed when he reposted the image.

The podcast was previously aired on BBC Sounds but following his exit it hasn’t had a mainstream home.

Following his departure from the BBC, it was announced that Lineker will host a quiz show on ITV called The Box which will see celebrity contestants transported to unknown locations, where they will take part in different games.

Announcing his exit in May, Lineker said in a statement that he did not see the image, and ‘would never consciously repost anything antisemitic’.

He added: ‘However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action.’
