A beautifully decorated Christmas tree sets the tone for the festive season.
For many, choosing ornaments is a family tradition – a chance to come together and enjoy the simple pleasures. Yet it can also feel daunting, especially if you’re unsure where to start.
I spoke to Whinnie Williams, Interior Designer and Trends Forecaster for Balsam Hill, to gather her advice on decorating your tree like a royal – before scouring the high street for regal-worthy pieces worth snapping up.
‘If you want your tree to look as if it’s graced the halls of a palace, it all starts with choosing materials and decorations that feel timeless,’ Whinnie tells me.
‘Think velvet ribbon, shine rather than tinsel-y sparkle, and vintage baubles you’ve hunted down over the years. There’s something wonderfully regal about a Christmas scheme that feels considered, collected and full of personal history.’
I have to agree – decorating Christmas trees rose to popularity in the Victorian era, and I personally love this traditional aesthetic. Thankfully, it’s easy to replicate with vintage-style baubles from the likes of Balsam Hill, Nkuku and Habitat.
Velvet bows are also having a moment, and I’ve found a beautifully dainty red set, along with a larger option that makes a real statement.
But Whinnie’s secret to creating a high-end tree? ‘You want the eye to dance around the branches. That means mixing textures and tones, and avoiding clumping matchy-matchy decorations together.
‘Instead, repeat key elements throughout the whole tree. It instantly elevates the look and gives that ‘dressed with intention’ finish that feels polished and wonderfully chic.’
One of her favourite styling tips is to mentally divide your tree into three sections, and then do the same with your decorations. This ensures even coverage and prevents you from using up all your best baubles before you’ve reached the top.
And remember, layering is key: tucking some baubles deeper into the branches creates depth and adds the dimensional, professional finish we all aspire to.

For a touch of festive fun, I had to include glass decorations of the Royal Family – from King Charles and Catherine, Princess of Wales, to Queen Elizabeth and her beloved corgi. Choose your favourites to bring a little royal charm to your home.
