LIONEL MESSI has made history again after breaking the all-time assist record in Inter Miami’s cup win over New York City, while also strengthening his position as the most decorated player.
The Barcelona legend is widely regarded as the greatest to have played the game after winning every trophy available to him in his star-studded career.
The 38-year-old is no longer playing at the highest level after moving to Inter Miami in the MLS, but that hasn’t stopped him from adding more accolades to his collection.
Messi played a starring role in Miami’s 5-1 romp over New York City to help them reach win the Eastern Conference final.
The World Cup winner assisted Mateo Silvetti’s goal to make it 3-0, and that took him above legendary former Real Madrid star Ferenc Puskas in the process.
Messi has now provided 405 assists in his career after 1168 games for club and country.
It surpasses the 404 Puskas managed, though the iconic forward played far fewer games with just 708.
The game also saw Messi pick up a record-extending 47th trophy after lifting the Eastern Conference cup.
He’ll have another chance to land more silverware after Miami progressed through to the MLS Cup final, where they’ll play Thomas Muller‘s Vancouver Whitecaps.
