Husband of £3million Omaze winner is jailed for sex crimes against girls as young as seven

The husband of a dinner lady who won a £3 million dream Cornish home in the Omaze lottery has been jailed for a series of sex crimes against children.

But relatives of the victims were furious that Anthony Doyle was given just six years and three months for 10 offences, spanning 13 years.

Doyle, 67, pleaded guilty to the crimes which included four sexual assaults against girls aged seven to 12 years old.

At a sentencing hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, the former gas engineer was jailed for a total of six years and three months

His Honour Judge Peter Carr told him: ‘Your victims will have to live with the effects of what you have done to them for far longer than this court will be able to sentence you to.’

But his sentence was blasted by relatives of his victims, who cannot be named.

The mother of one said: ‘He is given less years in prison than what he spent abusing. The courts just don’t seem able to deliver proper sentences.

‘His victims will need counselling, it will affect them all their lives and change how they interact with men and yet he’ll be out in a couple of years.

‘I don’t think that is a balanced sentence and we all wonder if there are more victims out there.’

Another said: ‘The public rightly take these crimes very seriously. They talk about stigma but that is not reflected by the courts.

‘He will be out when he’s 70 and still have maybe 20 more years of life. His victims will live with what he’s done for ever.’

Doyle, wearing spectacles and a turquoise tracksuit top, sat impassively in the dock throughout the hour-long hearing.

He never once looked to the public gallery which included two of his three victims and a number of their family members.

The court heard his offending covered a 12-year period and, as well as the sexual assaults, included two counts of voyeurism, one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of sexual activity with a child.

A final count was making indecent images of children.

The court heard that after his arrest in April of this year, police discovered 179 indecent pictures and 137 indecent videos featuring children. They were classed as Category C.

In mitigation, his defence counsel Harinderpaul Dhami, said, ‘He wishes to apologise to the court and to the complainants.

‘He was in a relationship with his wife for 47 years and divorce proceedings have now been started. He has destroyed everything he held so dear.’

She and husband Tony were photographed kissing for the cameras as they toasted their win with champagne and spoke of their plans for retirement and spoiling their family.

But a year later, they were both under arrest for alleged sexual offences.

West Midlands Police confirmed that enquiries into Mrs Doyle had ceased with no further action.

But her husband now faces spending several years in prison for his attacks on children.

He will also be subject to a life-long Sexual Harm Prevention Order to limit any interaction with children.

A family member said, ‘Rose is divorcing him. It should be finalised soon. She wants nothing more to do with him.’
