How the viral ‘supermodel smoothie’ put an LA grocery store on the map

HOW much would you pay for a smoothie? How about $22?

The average cost of a store-bought 16oz to 20oz smoothie in 2025 ranges between $5 and $10, or a little more depending on outlet, location and extras such as protein powders.

But upmarket organic health food chain Erewhon Market, based in and around Los Angeles, has taken things to a whole new level and made the humble smoothie into a status symbol.

Its specialty “gourmet” creations will set you back more than $20 for the most expensive Signature offerings – such as the $22 Strawberry Probiotic smoothie and the $21 Perfect Amino Choco-Revive by Gary Brecka.

Erewhon describes itself as a “a family-owned organic food retailer and café, offering nutrient-rich goods sourced from local growers and ethical brands”.

The cost of this focus on organic and local ingredients is inevitably passed on to the consumer.

It’s a premium product with a premium price tag: you’re buying a lifestyle, not just a drink.

Erewhon’s 11 market stores in balmy SoCal (plus one NYC pop-up) ensure high year-round demand for iced products.

Google Trends search data for ‘Erewhon smoothie’ in the US over time

The site shows growing interest in “Erewhon smoothie” as well as recent search spikes.

Most read in Diet & Nutrition

The top four locations looking at Erewhon last week were Manhattan Beach (a 100 score), followed by Beverly Hills (79), Santa Monica (56) and Culver City (33).

Celebrity endorsements and limited editions have made the brand super-aspirational and led to it being called the “supermodel smoothie”.

(Nobody mention the personal chefs, fitness trainers, stylists and so on that are also needed to get the look…)

Hailey Bieber helped launch the fuchsia-swirled Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie in 2022.

A blend of almond milk, organic strawberries, bananas, avocado, dates, maple syrup, collagen peptides, sea moss gel and coconut cream, it’s one of the key celebrity collabs that made Erewhon a social media sensation.

People still search for the “Hailey Bieber smoothie”, even in locations where it’s never been available (and even though her name was quietly removed from it recently).

Kendall Jenner’s Peaches & Cream smoothie also flew off the shelves with a portion of proceeds from each sale going to a domestic violence shelter. If you missed it, you could have a go at recreating one.

Supermodel Jasmine Tookes was pictured with the Golden Hour Glow smoothie in August, and in July Heidi Klum introduced the Kluminator smoothie in support of an East Hollywood children’s hospital.

Erewhon’s biggest competitor is Whole Foods Market, which has more than 500 US outlets and is searched far more frequently.

Yet across southern California, interest for Erewhon is fairly evenly split with Whole Foods.

And the celeb collabs are here to stay. Currently the top related topic searches are for singer-songwriter Erykah Badu, who has collaborated on the new $21 Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Bang Bang smoothie (a coconut water and milk-based smoothie with orange, pineapple, mango, dates, ashwagandha, spirulina, chlorella, hemp seeds, sea moss, lion’s mane and more).

It’s quite an ingredient list, but would you pay that much?

After all, you could make your own superfood smoothie for a fraction of the cost – albeit without the celebrity sparkle.
