One-cap England star Patrick Bamford makes shock Championship free transfer despite X-rated chant at manager

PATRICK BAMFORD has signed for Sheffield United after burying the hatchet with Chris Wilder.

And the one-capped England international could be unleashed in next week’s crunch Steel City derby relegation six-pointer with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 32-year-old striker, capped once by England, has been a free agent since leaving the Blades’ Yorkshire rivals Leeds United following last season’s Championship title success.

Bamford celebrated that triumph by leading supporters in an X-rated chant aimed at Wilder after pipping them to automatic promotion.

That led to an awkward 20-minute phone call from the experienced frontman to offer his apologies.

Now the pair have patched up their differences and will be working together to fire United away from trouble.

Bamford, who had previously been training with Frank Lampard’s Coventry City, has penned a short-term deal until January at Bramall Lane.

Wilder, axed after failing to secure promotion last term, recently returned to the Blades hot-seat.

United replaced him with Ruben Selles but the Spaniard lost his first six matches in charge before being sacked.

This lead to club chiefs going cap in hand to Wilder to bring him back for a third stint.

Bamford arrives with United, currently sitting in 22nd with just 10 points from 15 games.

Wilder will be hoping the striker will boost the team’s firepower in front of goal.

The club have only managed 11 goals in the Championship which is the worst record in the division.

Midfielder Callum O’Hare is currently the club’s top scorer in the league this season with just four.

Bamford now joins a striking department that already includes former West Ham star Danny Ings, Tyrese Campbell and Tom Cannon.

Bamford made over two hundred appearances for Leeds in a seven-year spell between 2018 and 2025.
