A cordon was set up on the riverside footpath and part of Prince of Wales Road was closed as emergency services rushed to the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene after being recovered from the river.

A cordon was put in place and part of Prince of Wales Road was closed as police, paramedics and fire crews worked along the riverside near Norwich train station.

According to witnesses, the man appeared to be wearing a high-vis jacket as rescue teams brought him to shore.

Nick Soanes, 55, who was working nearby, told Eastern Daily Press: “The police were here really quick, and so was fire.

“They had two boats, a little one and a big one, and they had him out within two minutes. The police had thrown life preservers in.”

Another witness added: “It’s all kicking off. Forensics just arrived, and a policeman was running. How sad.”

A spokesman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a Surface Rescue Boat from Carrow was deployed, along with crews from Sprowston, Earlham and Carrow.

One bystander said: “Everything kicked off at about half 11. When there are boats, it’s obvious it’s a body.

“It makes you stressed, it makes you think we live only once, and we must be careful.”

By late afternoon, a small cordon remained at Foundry Bridge while forensic investigators photographed the scene.

Police said: “Enquiries are being made to establish the person’s identity and how they came to be in the river.”
