Ex-Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood appears in court accused of rape and sexual assault

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood has appeared in court accused of rape and sexual assault.

The 68-year-old has been charged with 15 sexual offences relating to alleged attacks on seven women.

On Monday, he appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for the first time after being charged with four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault.

The former DJ was granted conditional bail ahead of his next appearance at Southwark Crown Court on December 8.

Mr Westwood, who stepped down in 2022, is accused of carrying out the attacks between 1983 and 2016.

The alleged offences include the rape of a teenage girl aged between 17 and 18 in London between 1995 and 1996.

He has also been charged with the rape and sexual assault of another teenager the same age between 2000 and 2002, and the rape of a woman in her 20s in London in 2010.

Other charges relate to an indecent assault of a 17-year-old girl in Fulham, London, in 1983, an alleged sexual assault of a woman in her 20s in Vauxhall, London and in 1986 he is said to have sexually assaulted a woman in her 20s in Stroud in 2010.

The most recent allegation relates to a sexual assault of a woman in her 20s in Finchley, north London, in 2016.

In 2022, 18 women came forward accusing the former DJ of sexual misconduct and predatory behaviour between 1992 and 2017.

Mr Westwood has previously said he ‘strongly denies all allegations of inappropriate behaviour’.

He left his show on Capital Xtra in April 2022, after ending his 20-year long career at Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra in 2013.

When he was charged last month Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, of the Metropolitan police, said: ‘It takes courage to come forward and report allegations of this nature.

‘The women who have done so have put their trust in us and we continue to provide them with all available support.

‘Our investigation remains open and we’d encourage anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone with information, to come forward and speak with us. Any reports will be dealt with in the strictest confidence by specialist officers.’
